Job Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Geochemical Modeler to join our team. You will play a crucial role in developing and refining our in-house model to simulate the enhanced rock weathering (ERW) process from the soil to the ocean. This role will involve modifying, incorporating and improving existing reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and hydrological models to accurately predict weathering rates, carbon sequestration, and environmental impacts of ERW specific to Brazilian conditions.

Job Responsibility:

  • Develop and maintain an in-house model for simulating enhanced rock weathering process in the near-field (soil) and far-field (groundwater, surface water, ocean) zones based on existing reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and hydrological models
  • Parameterize and validate the model using data from column, mesocosm, and field experiments to accurately reflect the specific feedstock, soil, climate, and geographic conditions of our projects
  • Work with in-house scientists to design and execute new research experiments to understand key mechanisms of the ERW process, which can be fed into the model development
  • Conduct simulations to predict feedstock weathering rates, carbon sequestration, and the spatial and temporal transport of weathering products from soil to the ocean
  • Conduct field-scale water flux estimations to support porewater-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) quantification
  • Analyze simulation results to understand the sensitivity of ERW performance to operational and environmental changes for optimal deployment strategy
  • Predict the impact of ERW on key environmental parameters, including soil fertility, water quality, and crop growth
  • Maintain existing and build new connections with external scientist for collaborative model development
  • Communicate model results and findings as reports and presentations to internal and external stakeholders
  • Present research findings at academic conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals

Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of geochemical processes and hydrological dynamics in the soil system
  • Strong programming skills (Python or Fortran) for model development
  • Experience running models using high-performance computing resources
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic research-oriented startup environment
  • PhD (or relevant experience) in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydrology, Geology, Geochemistry, Earth Sciences, or a related field
  • 3+ years of proven experience in developing, modifying, applying reactive transport, agro-ecosystem, and/or hydrological models

Nice to have:

  • Experience with modeling watershed-scale hydrological processes
  • Experience with modeling Enhanced Rock Weathering
What we offer:
  • Share options to make you feel like an owner
  • Home Office Budget
  • Fully Remote: Join us from anywhere within the CET (- 4/5-hour time zones)
  • Personal development budget
  • Language Programme Monthly Allowance
  • 34+ days annual leave
  • The opportunity to be autonomous, make a huge difference and belong to a vision
  • Occasional off-sites in Brazil
  • Laptop to fuel your productivity
