Under the direction of the Building Trades Supervisor, the General Maintenance Technician (GMT) is responsible for completing assigned work orders relating to the University’s 7-day, 24-hour service program for the safe operation, maintenance, and general upkeep of Brandeis facilities, buildings and equipment. Responds to routine general services requests as well as any/all emergency requests to ensure a safe and functional campus. Performs basic tasks associated with all major building trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and locksmithing). Covers shifts or portions of shifts for other employees working in the 24-hour service program. May be assigned to one or more trade shops.
Job Responsibility:
Complete assigned work orders relating to the University’s 7-day, 24-hour service program for the safe operation, maintenance, and general upkeep of Brandeis facilities, buildings and equipment
Respond to routine general services requests as well as any/all emergency requests to ensure a safe and functional campus
Perform basic tasks associated with all major building trades (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and locksmithing)
Cover shifts or portions of shifts for other employees working in the 24-hour service program
May be assigned to one or more trade shops
Carpentry: Wall repair
furniture repair
hang writing boards, shelving, and pictures
window and door hardware repair
ceiling tile replacement
window blind and shade repair and installation
window screen fabrication and installation
carpet and tile repair
painting
Locksmithing: Basic repair or replacement of door hardware including closers, locks, and cylinders
HVAC: Make minor repairs or adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment
cut threads, repack pumps
lubricate fans, motors, control units
change filters
install or remove heating /air conditioning units
Emergency Response: Upon receiving such instruction from Campus Public Safety personnel, shut down or close fire sprinkler valves
reset fire alarm panels
Assist other GMT staff with their daily tasks as needed, including carrying and transporting loads
Provide appropriate support during various university events, including annual electrical shutdown, opening of school and commencement
Follow proper safety procedures and observe all safety rules and regulations including OSHA
Clean work areas and maintain tools and equipment
Report on building damages, malfunctioning equipment, needed maintenance and/or repairs in assigned work areas
Respond to emergency call ins
Input data into computerized work order system, recording time and work order information
Participate in training to keep and acquire knowledge, skills and abilities to remain current with standard operational practices and revised standards
Maintain appropriate certifications and licenses
Interact professionally and follow up with members of the campus community
Requirements:
High or trade school graduate, or GED
Minimum of 3-5 years full-time demonstrated, documented experience performing a variety of work within the associated trades
Ability to keep records, write reports and identify job related materials
Ability to cover shifts or portions of shifts for other employees working in the 24-hour service program
