Job Description

This position provides general labor and research farm support for the San Luis Valley Research Center.

Job Responsibility

  • Research field maintenance (i.e., planting, irrigation, weed and pest control, general research plot upkeep)
  • experimental crop planning and harvesting
  • general maintenance and repair of the facilities, grounds and equipment.
  • Aids in the preparation of research field experiments and crops. Provides planting, irrigating, cultivating, roguing, harvesting, storing crops and various tasks important to the research initiatives at this station.
  • Maintenance, repair, and/or replacement of facilities, grounds, and equipment.

Requirements

  • This is an entry-level position for individuals with less than 2 years of professional experience. High School Diploma or GED.
  • Employees must provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and prove their authorization to work.
  • Experience in safe and proficient operation of farm and other heavy machinery such as small engines, rototiller/weed eater or the ability to learn.
  • Demonstrated communication skills and ability to understand both verbal and written instructions (English).
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include some heavy lifting (up to 100 lbs.) and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling.
  • Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise. Hazards include: working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals used in weed/pest control and fertilization.
  • Ability to accommodate Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) and to meet seasonal demands as well as varied work hours extending in night and/or weekend.
  • Ability to complete tasks in a timely manner with or without direct supervision.

Nice to have

  • Experience welding, general mechanic work and general facility maintenance.
  • Experience working with large-scale irrigation systems.
  • Experience in a research or compliance oriented environment.
  • Working knowledge of agriculture crops relevant to the SLV.
  • Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
  • Pesticide applicator’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
