The General Counsel will act as a strategic advisor and provide expert legal counsel, guide compliance initiatives, and influence company-wide governance in support of the company's goals and continued growth. The General Counsel will oversee a large established legal department with various business sectors and up to 10-13 direct reports.
Job Responsibility:
Lead the recruitment, onboarding, and training of legal department staff
Communicate the company's values and strategic vision, fostering collaboration and a sense of purpose across the organization
Establish clear job roles and performance expectations for team members, ensuring alignment with organizational goals
Provide strategic advice and counsel on legal and compliance matters, including employment law, data privacy, ethics, and regulatory changes
Manage all aspects of legal cases, including litigation and disputes, while coordinating with external counsel
Develop and oversee governance policies, evaluating risks and implementing proactive solutions to mitigate potential issues
Monitor compliance activities across business units, conducting risk assessments and implementing corrective measures when necessary
Advise on corporate transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, and partnerships, ensuring all legal aspects are properly addressed
Maintain corporate records and filings, ensuring compliance with statutory obligations and legal standards
Consults with executives on the development of their team's strategy while making recommendations on how to improve, design, and streamline applicable policies, procedures, and practices
Develop and monitor legal department budget, including internal and external counsel
Requirements:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in good standing
A minimum of 7-10+ years of experience at an executive counsel level
Experience managing at least 5-10 direct reports while overseeing various legal business units
Strong background in managing legal and compliance functions within a corporate setting
Proven ability to handle litigation, dispute resolution, and pre-litigation strategies effectively
Experience with governance policies, risk assessment, and implementing proactive solutions
Skilled in contract negotiation and drafting to address complex corporate transactions
Knowledge of regulatory requirements, data privacy, and industry-specific legal standards
Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments
Experience working with and communicating to executive level leadership including the C-Suite, Board of Directors, and management teams
Experience managing a large legal department budget
Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required
