An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and forward-thinking Consultant Gastroenterologist to join an ambitious and innovative GI service in the South West. This dynamic department integrates gastroenterology, upper gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, emergency general surgery, and endoscopy, delivering a comprehensive digestive diseases service to both local and regional populations. The successful applicant will join a progressive, collaborative team committed to improving patient outcomes through modernised pathways, digital innovation, and multidisciplinary working. Subspecialty interests are welcomed and encouraged, particularly where they enhance and complement the existing gastroenterology provision. The service currently has the capacity to support all gastroenterology subspecialties, offering exceptional scope for development.
Job Responsibility:
Participate in general and subspecialty outpatient clinics via telephone, video, and face-to-face appointments
Provide upper and lower GI endoscopy within a modern, well-equipped endoscopy suite
Management of therapeutic endoscopy depending on subspecialty interest
Participation in quality improvement and service development in endoscopy
Take part in the acute gastroenterology rota on a 2 in 12 basis
Daily ward rounds for gastroenterology inpatients (6 days per week during rota weeks)
Assessment of referrals from the acute medical take
In-reach to clinical teams requiring gastroenterology input
Management of upper GI bleeds during working hours (09:00–18:00)
Active participation in teaching programmes for undergraduate medical students, Foundation trainees, Core medical trainees, and Specialist registrars
Contribute to departmental education sessions and help shape the development of junior clinicians
Participate in departmental and divisional management activities
Support service improvement initiatives
Engage in annual job planning, appraisal and revalidation
Contribute to clinical governance, audit, and patient safety processes
Play a key role in redesigning pathways to improve efficiency, access and patient experience
Requirements:
Full GMC registration with licence to practise
Minimum 1 year of NHS experience
Broad experience and high-level competence in general gastroenterology
JAG-accredited OGD and colonoscopy
Experience in managing upper GI bleeding (endoscopic and non-endoscopic)
Competence in managing acute GI emergencies
Ability to apply clear clinical reasoning and sound judgement
Experience across ward, outpatient and endoscopy settings
Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team
Experience contributing to service delivery and improvement
Understanding of NHS performance targets and objectives
Ability to balance personal workload with departmental priorities
Excellent written and spoken English
Ability to communicate clearly with patients, carers, colleagues and external agencies
Demonstrates empathy and sensitivity in patient interactions
Able to build trust and confidence within the team
Evidence of previous teaching experience
Willingness to contribute to formal teaching programmes
Ability to inspire, support and supervise junior doctors
Evidence of contribution to clinical audit, QI and risk reduction
Commitment to learning from incidents and improving safety culture
