Gap Year Pathology Program for Students Pursuing Healthcare Graduate Degrees. Embark on a gap year with HPA’s Postgraduate Pathology Program—an outstanding opportunity for passionate individuals aspiring to pursue a medical graduate degree or healthcare postgraduate program. Our program provides learning experiences in the science of disease causes and effects through examining human tissue and the practice of laboratory medicine.
Job Responsibility:
Collaborate closely with pathologists and laboratory professionals in collecting, processing, and diagnosing pathologic specimens
Organize, prioritize, and distribute cases to pathologists to facilitate an orderly and efficient workflow
Identify and retrieve specific clinical information from patients’ charts and outside healthcare facilities
Communicate and problem solve with multiple pathologists and hospital personnel
Assist other pathology aides as needed
Responsible for accurate and efficient delivery of specimens between operating rooms and Central Laboratory
Communicate with surgeons and relay messages to pathology staff
Organizes and prepares multidisciplinary patient care-planning conferences
Coordinates and prepares the materials needed for disease-treatment conferences for HPA pathologists
Collaborates with pathologists and various hospital administrators on a daily basis
Assists with other educational projects as needed
Coordinates HPA review of medical literature and publications
Perform gross examinations of routine pathology specimens
Data entry of pathologic data into the electronic medical record
Assist with the management of surgical specimens, including “flagging” cases for cancer prioritization processing
Requirements:
4-year undergraduate degree in pre-health program with 3.0 GPA or higher and the intention of applying to medical school or other healthcare postgraduate program
Proficiency with computers and technology (specifically with Microsoft Office applications)
Organization skills and attention to detail
Ability to adapt and respond to problems in an efficient and creative manner
Ability to multi-task efficiently during periods of high workload and stress
Ability to initiate changes independently and demonstrate personal accountability
