Job Description

We are looking for a Controller to lead the accounting and reporting for a small venture capital company. This position partners with internal stakeholders and external advisors to deliver accurate financial information, maintain compliance obligations, and support a high standard of reporting. Based in Sherman Oaks, California, the role plays a key part in strengthening financial operations and ensuring timely execution of fund-related activities.

Job Responsibility

  • Direct accounting activities across multiple vehicles, including capital activity, cash movements, allocation methodologies, and overall ledger accuracy
  • Produce quarterly and annual fund financial statements that align with applicable reporting standards and organizational requirements
  • Coordinate year-end audits and tax reporting processes, working closely with outside auditors and tax professionals to ensure timely completion of K-1s and related filings
  • Oversee limited partner reporting deliverables and support clear, accurate communication tied to fund performance and financial results
  • Assist with fund closings, launches of new investment vehicles, and transaction support related to portfolio company activity
  • Review and enhance accounting workflows, internal controls, and financial systems to improve reliability, efficiency, and scalability
  • Partner with fund administrators and cross-functional teams to resolve accounting issues, reconcile data, and maintain consistent reporting across stakeholders
  • Utilize NetSuite to manage accounting records, reporting processes, and financial oversight responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline
  • At least 5 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within venture capital, private equity, or asset management environments
  • Understanding of partnership accounting, fund structures, and investment-related financial activity
  • Demonstrated experience preparing financial reports, supporting audits, and managing annual tax-related deliverables
  • Proficiency with ERP like Oracle, Netsuite, SAP, or Dynamics
  • High attention to detail with the ability to organize priorities and manage multiple deadlines effectively
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for working with internal teams, and external advisors

  • Review of quarterly and annual tax deliverables provided to the tax department and external tax preparers, which may include taxable income estimates, tax waterfalls, REIT tests, and tax basis cost rollforwards
  • Prepare/ review and present materials for portfolio management meetings, including cash flow projections, distribution and contribution recommendations, loan?to?value and debt yield metrics, and updates to projected IRR models
  • Partner with the Capital Markets team, lenders, legal counsel, and the CFO on various finance-related matters
