Job Description

Total Training Provision is seeking a committed and learner-focused Functional Skills Coach to deliver high-quality Maths and English provision to learners aged 16+ across a range of contracts. This role is central to ensuring learners make substantial and sustained progress from their individual starting points. The successful candidate will have strong experience supporting learners with additional learning needs and barriers, applying adaptive teaching strategies to ensure inclusive, ambitious and impactful learning. Delivery will take place both remotely and face-to-face, through a blend of group sessions and 1-2-1 support. The role includes managing a caseload of up to 50 learners, maintaining high expectations, and ensuring consistent progress in line with individual learning plans.

Job Responsibility

  • Deliver well-sequenced, ambitious Functional Skills Maths and English sessions that build learners’ knowledge and skills over time
  • Plan and implement individualised learning journeys informed by robust Initial Assessments and Diagnostics using Century Tech
  • Ensure learning is contextualised to learners’ vocational sectors to increase relevance, engagement and long-term retention
  • Adapt teaching strategies effectively to meet the needs of learners with SEND and those facing barriers to achievement
  • Check learners’ understanding regularly and provide timely feedback to secure progress
  • Ensure every learner visit results in measurable progress against individual targets
  • Maintain a minimum of 14 learner visits per week in line with KPIs
  • Use Century Tech to inform personalised learning pathways and monitor progress
  • Accurately record learner progress, reviews, targets and evidence using OneFile
  • Track and analyse progress to ensure learners achieve within agreed timescales, based on their individual starting points and needs
  • Intervene early where learners are at risk of falling behind
  • Identify additional learning needs and implement appropriate support strategies
  • Apply adaptive teaching approaches that remove barriers and promote independence
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and external stakeholders where appropriate to support learner success
  • Promote high expectations for attendance, participation and achievement
  • Embed British Values, Prevent and Safeguarding within teaching practice
  • Support learners to develop confidence, resilience and positive attitudes towards Maths and English
  • Create safe, respectful and inclusive learning environments (both remote and face-to-face)

  • Act promptly on any safeguarding concerns in line with organisational procedures
  • Ensure all documentation is accurate, timely and compliant with funding and quality requirements

Requirements

  • Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths and/or English to learners aged 16+
  • Proven experience supporting learners with SEND and additional learning needs
  • Strong understanding of adaptive teaching and inclusive practice
  • Experience working with learners who have barriers to engagement or achievement
  • Ability to use diagnostic assessment to inform teaching and planning
  • Experience using e-portfolio systems such as OneFile
  • Experience using Century Tech or similar IA/diagnostic platforms
  • Knowledge of Ofsted’s Education Inspection Framework and quality expectations
  • Understanding of Safeguarding, Prevent and British Values

Nice to have

  • Teaching qualification (PGCE, Cert Ed, DET or equivalent)
  • Level 5 SEND specialist qualification (or working towards)
  • Experience within apprenticeships or vocational training environments
