The Fractional Controller provides high-level accounting expertise to clients on a part-time or project basis, helping them strengthen financial operations, improve reporting processes, and support strategic decision-making. This hands-on role involves leading month-end close procedures, preparing financial statements, optimizing accounting workflows, and delivering insight-driven financial analysis. The Fractional Controller partners closely with client leadership teams and internal staff to implement best practices, oversee special projects, and drive process improvements. This role offers variety and challenge through engagements across multiple industries, each with unique needs and opportunities.
Job Responsibility:
Serves as a trusted advisor and liaison between Boyum Barenscheer and client finance teams, leadership, and boards
Guides clients through year-end accounting processes, ensuring timely preparation of financial statements and audit-ready documentation
Supports core accounting functions such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, revenue recognition, and general ledger reconciliations
Develops and implements daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting procedures tailored to each client’s needs
Recommends and helps implement improvements to accounting systems, operational workflows, and internal controls
Ensures compliance with accounting standards and financial reporting requirements
Produces and interprets financial reports, forecasts, and risk analyses for leadership teams
Assists with budgeting and forecasting processes, and provides guidance on financial planning activities
Identifies potential accounting or compliance risks and recommends appropriate mitigation strategies
Establishes and tracks benchmarks for measuring financial performance and goal achievement
Trains and mentors client accounting staff on best practices and routine reporting processes
Leads or supports system transitions, software implementations, and integrations in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required
Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive accounting experience
CPA license is preferred
Public accounting experience is desirable
Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, financial statement preparation, and project work
Proficient in accounting software platforms and Excel
experience with ERP systems and process automation tools a plus
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable recommendations
Effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and client service skills
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and adapt in dynamic environments
Experience training or supervising accounting staff preferred
Authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis
Required to sit for long periods
Extensive computer, keyboard, and mouse use
Occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
Nice to have:
CPA license
Public accounting experience
