Job Description

This specialised SEN teacher position focuses on Food Technology, providing exceptional education to children and young individuals navigating emotional regulation, social communication, and sensory processing difficulties frequently linked with autism. Certain pupils face co-occurring conditions which can create learning hurdles and cause challenging behaviours, requiring an unwavering and highly flexible approach to ensure their personal and academic growth. This role offers lots of job satisfaction as you teach vital life skills, culinary independence, and watch students' confidence in the kitchen develop. We operate a strict no-sponsorship policy; all applicants must have the permanent right to work in the UK.

Job Responsibility

  • Curriculum Delivery: To contribute to the delivery and development of the curriculum, with a particular focus on our Food Technology curriculum, having regard to the educational, physical, sensory, and social needs of the students within a kitchen and classroom learning environment
  • Collaborative Working: To work collaboratively with other members of staff as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure holistic student support
  • Lesson Planning: To maintain and use short, medium, and long-term plans to deliver the Food Technology curriculum safely and effectively
  • Target Setting: To set, monitor, and review personalised targets that will optimise practical and academic learning for each individual student
  • Progress Reporting: To monitor, assess, review, and report on the progress and work of students to parents, team members, and senior staff through identified meetings and reports
  • Promoting Independence: To develop lesson plans, analysing and self-reflecting on outcomes to foster independent cooking and kitchen safety skills in students
  • SEN Administration: To contribute to the review of Statements and EHC plans, PEP, and LAC reviews
  • Classroom & Behavior Management: To provide clear structures for practical and theoretical lessons, maintaining pace, motivation, and challenge while managing challenging behaviours and kitchen safety risks in a non-confrontational way

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Experience in special school settings, particularly with pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Proven ability to deliver a differentiated practical and theoretical curriculum to meet diverse learning needs
  • Strong knowledge of the National Curriculum, specifically relating to Design and Technology / Food Technology and hospitality/life skills
  • Prior experience of delivering BTEC home cooking or similar
  • Ability to teach Food Technology up to GCSE level
  • Working understanding of ASC and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including complex presentations
  • Working understanding of ASC and Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, including complex presentations and sensory sensitivities related to food
  • Access to your own vehicle due to the site's location

Nice to have

  • Additional qualifications in SEN and experience within an environment teaching, supporting, and nurturing those with autism

  • Relevant health and safety or food hygiene qualifications (e.g., Food Safety Level 2 or 3)
