Position provides department level management and administration of the Fire Department, including the activities of fire suppression and prevention, rescue and emergency medical services, fire alarms, fire warden, hazardous materials, emergency management, budgetary and capital management, building, vehicle and facility operation and maintenance, personnel administration and training.
Job Responsibility:
Provides department level management and administration of the Fire Department
Plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the activities of the department
Responsible for the administration of the department under the provisions of state and local laws
Manages department and administers all programs
Evaluates department operations, appoints officers and fire fighters, administers discipline
Interview and select candidates for promotion or hire
Oversee employee development, performance evaluations, training programs, and discipline
Manages the operations of the Town’s emergency services and ambulance operations
Responds to major fires and emergency situations and serves as the incident commander
Prepare departmental budget
Enforces fire safety laws and by-laws
Develops and administers a fire prevention program
Acts as forest warden
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Business, Public Administration or a related field
5 to 7 years responsible municipal experience
3 years in a supervisory capacity
Driver’s license
Certified as a minimum Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Knowledge of principles and practices of modern public administration and financial management
Knowledge of Massachusetts statutes, rules and regulations related to Fire Suppression and Prevention, Emergency Medical Care, and Emergency Response Management
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
Skill in organizing, directing, and coordinating department activities
Supervisory, leadership, personnel management, writing, communication, and delegation skills
Nice to have:
Graduate of United States Fire Administration’s Executive Fire Officer Program (EFO) at the National Fire Academy
