Job Description:

Are you ready to take the reins of financial operations in a thriving law firm? My client, a successful legal practise nestled in the heart of Chelmsford, is on the lookout for a proactive and commercially minded Financial Controller to join their team on a temporary fixed-term basis. This exciting opportunity is to cover maternity leave, and it promises to be a dynamic and rewarding role!

Job Responsibility:

  • Oversee all financial activities: day-to-day accounting, financial planning, and management reporting
  • Ensure compliance with CLC Accounts Rules, particularly in handling and reconciling client accounts
  • Prepare monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with UK GAAP
  • Produce cash flow forecasts and manage working capital to meet operational needs
  • Liaise with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory bodies
  • Collate payroll data and coordinate with Accountants
  • Manage VAT returns and corporation tax filings in line with HMRC requirements
  • Collaborate with the conveyancing team for timely billing and accurate fee allocation
  • Maintain and enhance internal financial controls, policies, and systems
  • Provide financial insights to support pricing strategies and business decisions
  • Lead, develop, and support a small finance team of three
  • Contribute to strategic planning and budgeting processes
  • Assist with other duties as needed

Requirements:

  • Full or part qualified (ACA, ACCA, or CIMA) with a minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role
  • Previous experience in a legal service firm or professional services environment is highly desirable
  • Strong working knowledge of CLC requirements and handling client funds is advantageous
  • Familiarity with accounting systems such as Xero and Hoowla is a plus
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial matters to the board
  • Leadership experience in managing a small finance team
  • A proactive, professional approach with a commercial mindset and client focus

Nice to have:

  • Familiarity with accounting systems such as Xero and Hoowla
  • Previous experience in a legal service firm or professional services environment
