The Waymo Safety team works to promote and help to continuously improve the safety of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our experts develop safety goals and strategies, and conduct safety engineering analyses to ensure safety is being considered throughout the design and development of our vehicles. This role is based in Tokyo, reporting to Waymo’s Senior Director, Safety based in California. As Waymo’s first Field Safety Engineer in Japan, you will serve as Waymo’s primary engineering/technical liaison with safety regulators in Japan, working closely with Waymo’s Policy, Legal, and other teams in Japan. You will also work with Waymo’s Field Safety team in the United States to identify and analyze issues that could impact the safety of Waymo’s fleet of autonomous vehicles, with a focus on issues specific to Waymo’s operations in Japan.
Job Responsibility:
Be a native Japanese speaker, also proficient in English
Serve as Waymo’s primary engineering/technical liaison with automotive and traffic safety regulators in Japan, e.g. Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) National Police Agency (NPA), and Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD). You will work with Waymo’s Policy, Legal, and other teams to establish and maintain proactive outreach with these regulators and also respond to requests from regulators
You will work with Waymo’s Field Safety team in the United States to identify and analyze issues that could impact the safety of Waymo’s fleet of autonomous vehicles, bringing your local Japan perspective to help identify and prioritize issues that could impact Waymo’s operations in Japan
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical degree
10+ years of engineering or other technical experience in automotive or another transportation field
Experience with Japan’s automotive and/or transportation regulatory framework and familiarity with expectations when working with these regulators
Strong communication and presentation skills in Japanese and the ability to establish and maintain professional presence with regulators in Japan
A collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively with Policy, Legal, Operations, Engineering and other internal teams in Japan and in the United States
Nice to have:
M.S. or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical field
Experience interacting with automotive and traffic safety regulators
Familiarity with autonomous vehicle technology
Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly-scaling company
