Job Description

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance (BHSI) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced underwriter to join the U.S. Central Region Property team based in Chicago, IL. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and underwriting property business across the U.S. Central region marketplace and play a pivotal role in growing the General Property portfolio. The individual will analyze property risk exposures of new and renewal business to make sound underwriting decisions. Additionally, the underwriter will be responsible for profitably developing and growing the portfolio through production and marketing calls with brokers and customers. The title of the role will be commensurate with the level of experience of the successful candidate.

Job Responsibility

  • Solicit and underwrite new and renewal property submissions
  • Grow the property book of business, which includes quota share, primary, and excess layer structures
  • Participate as an advocate for the business and take ownership of the success of the property portfolio
  • Develop and expand broker and customer relationships with integrity, working both independently and in conjunction with other BHSI product lines
  • Analyze information relating to catastrophe modelling, engineer reports, valuation reports, etc
  • Review and approve manuscript policies
  • Work in a fast-paced, bottom line-oriented environment, multi-task, and make quick decisions while maintaining underwriting integrity

Requirements

  • 5+ years commercial insurance experience
  • Strong existing broker relationships
  • Strong underwriting acumen and attention to detail
  • Adaptable in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong understanding of policy forms, including broker manuscripts
  • Strong collaboration and team building skills
  • Strong communication skills including negotiation and presentation experience
  • Willing to travel
  • Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience
