Job Description:
You’ve heard the saying… behind every great leader is an amazing EA. If that’s you and you’re ready for a fresh challenge to showcase your strengths in 2026, this might just be the role you’ve been waiting for. Southland District Council as steward for 11% of the total land area of Aotearoa New Zealand, including the spectacular Fiordland and Rakiura / Stewart Island National Parks, and more than 30 diverse communities manages the largest land area of any territorial authority in the country. Our work spans everything from roads, water, community facilities, and parks to the social, cultural, economic and environmental wellbeing of our communities. Local government is in a period of significant change. With multiple reform programmes underway, shifting legislative frameworks and increasing external pressures, we’re balancing the cost of doing business with enabling the growth, resilience and future of our communities. Innovation, partnerships and delivery for our communities are central to our organisation’s focus. That’s where you come in. We’re searching for an experienced, savvy Executive Assistant who thrives in a fast‑paced environment where no two days are ever the same. This role supports our senior leadership and it’s suited to someone exceptional. Someone who can effortlessly juggle multiple priorities, anticipate needs before they arise, think on their feet and maintain calm professionalism even on the busiest days, all while ensuring an outstanding customer experience. You won’t be doing it alone. You’ll be part of a collaborative, high‑performing team of professional EAs who back each other up, share knowledge and work collectively to ensure seamless support across our leadership group. If you value teamwork as much as individual excellence, you’ll fit right in. You’ll be a natural organiser and a confident communicator, equally at home co-ordinating events, navigating technology, preparing reports and correspondence, researching on the fly, and spotting risks before others see them. Political astuteness, sound judgement and absolute confidentiality are essential. If your strengths include exceptional administration and organisational ability, sharp attention to detail, relationship building, managing upwards, and navigating challenges with professionalism and tact and you’re energised by being part of a strong, supportive team then this role is made for you.
