Job Description

M. R. Tanner Construction is seeking an Estimator to support our construction operations throughout Arizona. The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for both public and private construction projects. This role supports the pre-construction process by analyzing drawings, specifications, and other documentation to develop detailed cost projections, ensuring alignment with project scope, schedule, and company objectives.

Job Responsibility

  • Review and interpret project plans, specifications, addenda, and bid documents for public and private projects
  • Prepare/Review detailed quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor scopes
  • Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier quotes to ensure scope completeness and competitiveness
  • Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and clients
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and project walkthroughs
  • Identify potential risks, value engineering opportunities, and cost-saving strategies
  • Prepare bid proposals and ensure timely submission in accordance with project requirements
  • Collaborate with project managers, superintendents, and other internal teams during handoff from estimating to operations
  • Maintain accurate estimating databases and historical cost information
  • Ensure compliance with applicable public works requirements, including prevailing wage (e.g., Davis-Bacon, if applicable), bonding & bid regulations

Requirements

  • 3–7+ years of estimating experience in the construction industry
  • Experience with preparing cost estimates for: public works (CMAR, JOC, etc), private sector & residential construction (Hard Bid or Private Bid)
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and cost control practices for Civil Construction and Paving Maintenance
  • Proficiency in B2W estimating software, MS Project & Excel
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills

Nice to have

  • Experience in the Arizona construction market
  • Familiarity with state and local procurement processes (e.g., municipalities, school districts, ADOT)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
