Job Description

A well-respected, full-service law firm located in downtown Chicago is seeking a thoughtful, client-focused Estate Planning Attorney to join its Trusts & Estates group. This established firm serves individuals, families, entrepreneurs, and family-owned businesses on complex wealth-transfer planning, probate and trust administration, charitable giving, and business-succession strategies. The team prides itself on practical advice, meticulous drafting, and responsive service.

Job Responsibility

  • Advise clients on estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer planning
  • develop tailored plans aligning with tax and non-tax objectives
  • Draft estate planning instruments (wills, revocable/irrevocable trusts—including ILITs, SLATs, GRATs, charitable trusts—powers of attorney, etc.)
  • Advise on asset titling, beneficiary designations, and coordinated planning across retirement accounts, life insurance, and business interests
  • Manage probate and trust administrations including court filings, accountings, asset marshaling, creditor claims, and required notices
  • Guide fiduciaries on duties and risk management
  • handle trust modifications, decantings, and nonjudicial settlement agreements
  • Assist with business-succession planning (buy-sell agreements, recapitalizations) in collaboration with corporate/real estate teams
  • Liaise with clients’ external advisors (CPAs, financial advisors, etc.) on tax compliance and implementation
  • Conduct legal research, maintain organized files, and ensure timely, accurate billing

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school
  • bar admission in Illinois or timely eligibility
  • Minimum 5 years dedicated trusts & estates experience, covering both planning and probate/trust administration
  • Strong drafting skills and attention to detail
  • ability to communicate complex concepts clearly
  • Working knowledge of federal transfer-tax principles and Illinois probate practice
  • Excellent organization, judgment, and client-service skills
  • ability to work independently and in teams

Nice to have

  • LL.M. in Taxation and/or significant transfer-tax planning experience
  • Experience with high-net-worth clients, closely held/family businesses, charitable planning, family limited entities
  • Familiarity with Illinois Probate Act practice in Cook County and surrounding areas
  • Comfort with practice-management and document-automation tools
