Under the direction of the Conservation Agent, position serves as professional staff for the Conservation Commission and performs technical inspection work including field visits, attending Commission meetings as required, and otherwise ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state and local wetlands regulations, codes, and bylaws. Acts for the Conservation Agent in his or her absence.
Job Responsibility
Assists the Agent in the administration and enforcement of the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (WPA), Canton Wetlands Bylaw and Regulations, Canton Stormwater Bylaw and Regulations, and other relevant town bylaws and regulations as may be appropriate
Assists in ensuring legal requirements are met including postings, timeframes, minutes, records retention schedule, and other records
Conducts review of plans submitted to determine compliance with state and local wetlands regulations and federal and state laws, including site visits
Reviews permit application submissions and associated documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with the law and regulations
Reviews field delineations, sensitive areas, presence of rare species, etc
Inspects worksites to determine compliance with application laws, rules, and regulations
Prepares relevant forms/reports
Responds to inquires from the public about application procedures and deadlines, land conservation issues, and helps review permit inquiry forms
Assists in administration and management of municipal conservation land, conservation restrictions, and easements including monitoring for compliance, maintenance activities, posting signage, removal of invasive species, and more
Assures compliance with rules and regulations for conservation lands
addresses user problems
Assist with administrative obligations including for creating content for and maintaining the Commission section of the town website, the Commission's social media accounts, etc
Performs all other related duties as required
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Soil Science, Wetland Science, or related field and one to three years of experience in a related field
or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Possession of a valid State-issued driver's license is required
Experience with wetland protection, stormwater management, and/or erosion control best practices in a municipal setting is preferred
Nice to have
Knowledge of Massachusetts Wetland Protection Act and Regulations, principles of land protection and management preferred, but not required
Knowledge of Conservation Commission administration and Massachusetts municipal government
