Job Description

We are seeking to hire an entry-level Scientist to join our robust Natural Resources. This position will assist project managers with natural resource-based projects involving wetlands, threatened & endangered species, and water resource permitting issues. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to be highly organized, multi-task, and navigate various complex projects. This role requires a proactive and detail-oriented individual with strong analytical skills, effective communication abilities, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to taking initiative. Primary duties are located within an office or remote office environment with occasional fieldwork.

Job Responsibility

  • Conduct fieldwork tasks such as wetland delineations, natural resources inventories, and environmental surveys
  • Provide technical support for permit compliance and regulatory requirements
  • Be prepared for frequent travel, including overnight stays both within and outside the state
  • Assist project managers with various tasks to ensure project success
  • Manage project schedules and budgets to ensure timely completion of deliverables
  • Contribute to project proposals and collaborate with team members
  • Stay updated on federal and regional regulations
  • Build relationships with relevant agencies and represent Benesch as a subject matter expert
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness and professionalism in the workplace

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology or Environmental Sciences with 1-4 years of relevant work experience
  • Prior experience in wetland delineation, botanical surveys, and surveys related to threatened and endangered species
  • Familiarity with native vegetation identification and state and federal environmental permitting
  • Proficiency in technical writing and experience in quality assurance/quality control of data and reporting are essential

Nice to have

  • Previous experience in renewable energy projects is a plus
  • Knowledge of state and federal permitting processes is desired

  • Actively participate in environmental remediation projects, including planning, coordination, sampling, execution, safety lead duties for field activities, data analysis, and technical reporting phases
  • Conduct comprehensive field investigations utilizing standard field practices and equipment for the collection of samples, including soil, groundwater, soil vapor, surface water, sediment, and potable water
  • Lead subsurface drilling programs (conventional and direct push), perform soil logging, soil and rock classification, prepare boring logs and well construction logs
  • Apply a foundation in natural sciences (chemistry, physics, biology, geology-hydrogeology, and mathematics) along with engineering principles to explain environmental observations and develop effective solutions to complex environmental issues and problems
  • Assist with environmental remediation system installation, operation and maintenance
  • Ensure environmental compliance by reviewing environmental regulations and supporting environmental permitting and other compliance needs
  • Gather, interpret, and organize diverse environmental data sets using spreadsheets, graphs, or models
  • Oversee and effectively manage subcontractors, assuring strict adherence to work scopes, project specifications, and rigorous safety requirements
