Job Description:

Abacus Staffing is seeking an Environmental Educator Instructor to develop, present, and support the environmental education instructional program for St. Mary's County Public Schools, instructing students from PreK to 12 in various subjects and settings.

Job Responsibility:

  • Work directly with the Environmental Education Teacher in developing, presenting and supporting the instructional program of environmental education
  • Instruct field and classroom programs for PreK - 12 students at field sites and school sites in areas including ecology, natural resources, canoeing and water safety
  • Provide professional development and resource assistance to SMCPS teachers and staff
  • Work closely with SMCPS teachers and staff and community partners to deliver environmental programs
  • Proactively collaborate with staff to deliver and improve the instructional program
  • Actively participate in professional development activities
  • Initiate and maintain care and protection of program materials and sites without supervision

Requirements:

  • Excellent student engagement and participation skills
  • Ability to work outdoors in hot and cold temperatures, in inclement weather, on uneven terrain, on and in the water, and with wildlife
  • Associates degree or higher preferred
  • Experience as a field instructor, naturalist or camp director preferred
  • Certification and experience as an instructor of water safety, canoeing or kayaking
  • Maintain certification in CPR/first Aid
  • Ability to integrate SMCPS content standards to provide transdisciplinary environmental instruction
  • Respectful and effective communications skills for interactions with students, colleagues, SMCPS teachers, administrators and staff, parents and community members
  • Ability to incorporate feedback and direction

Nice to have:

  • Experience as a field instructor, naturalist or camp director
  • Certification and experience as an instructor of water safety, canoeing or kayaking
