The UK Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) Biosafety Manager provides expert leadership and assurance for the management of biological risks across UK R&D operations. The role acts as the UK focal point for biosafety governance, Biological Safety Officer (BSO) capability, regulatory engagement and operational support, ensuring that work involving biological agents, GMOs and advanced biological technologies is conducted safely, compliantly and efficiently. The role operates as a senior technical specialist within UK EHSS R&D, working closely with site EHS teams, scientific leaders and enabling functions to embed proportionate, risk‑based biosafety controls that support delivery while maintaining regulatory and organisational confidence. In addition, the role provides general EHS support across assigned UK R&D sites and business areas, contributing to broader health, safety and environmental management activities as required.
Job Responsibility:
Serve as the UK subject matter expert for biosafety and biological risk management across R&D activities, offering expert advice and guidance on work involving biological agents, GMOs, viral vectors, cell and gene therapy platforms, and related technologies
Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of the UK Biosafety Management System, ensuring compliance with GSK standards and legal requirements, and overseeing biosafety governance activities such as approval pathways, deviations, incidents, and corrective actions
Review and assure biological risk assessments, containment strategies, and operational controls, making certain they are suitable, sufficient, and risk-based, and monitor biosafety performance indicators and trends, reporting assurance and improvement actions to UK EHSS leadership
Provide functional leadership and mentoring to site Genetically Modified Safety Committee representatives, ensuring role clarity, competence, and consistency of approach, and promote a strong biosafety culture through training, communication, and technical leadership
Represent the business during biosafety-related inspections, audits, and engagements with regulators and competent authorities, acting as the primary UK point of contact for biosafety regulatory interactions including notifications, inspections, and formal correspondence
Support scientific and operational teams through early engagement on new or changing activities, contribute to the development and deployment of EHS standards ensuring practical local implementation, and provide general EHS support to UK R&D sites including broader health, safety, and environmental risks
Requirements:
Degree in a relevant scientific or professional discipline (e.g. biology, microbiology, virology, biotechnology or biomedical sciences, NEBOSH diploma or level 5/6 equivalent EHS related qualification)
Proven ability to influence senior scientific and operational stakeholders using risk‑based judgement
Strong working knowledge of UK biosafety legislation and regulatory expectations
Ability to build trusted relationships with scientists, EHS professionals and senior leaders
Provides calm, credible leadership during complex or sensitive risk discussions
Nice to have:
Formal Biological Safety Officer (BSO) or equivalent biosafety training
Extensive practical experience in biosafety or biological risk management within regulated R&D or pharmaceutical environments
Membership of a recognised professional body, such as the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research (ISTR) or equivalent
Experience supporting HSE inspections and regulatory submissions related to biosafety
Experience working across multiple sites or diverse scientific portfolios
