Job Description:

To provide environmental and sustainability leadership, ensuring that the project’s construction site and associated developments maintain full compliance with all Environmental Permits, Licences, and relevant regulatory commitments. The postholder will drive best practice, support a strong environmental culture, and ensure consistent and effective environmental management across a large, complex infrastructure programme.

Job Responsibility:

  • Provide environmental and sustainability leadership, ensuring the project’s construction site maintains full compliance with all Environmental Permits, Licences, and regulatory commitments
  • Drive best practice and support a strong environmental culture
  • Provide clear, consistent leadership to direct reports and Tier 1 suppliers
  • Establish, maintain, and oversee compliance arrangements aligned with all environmental commitments
  • Manage, coordinate, and monitor environmental and sustainability activities across site operations
  • Champion world-class environmental behaviours across site teams and the wider supply chain
  • Ensure significant environmental aspects are identified, controlled, and effectively mitigated
  • Drive environmental and sustainability performance across the project
  • Work with the client team to support engagement with environmental regulators
  • Provide a highly professional, client-focused service across all environmental and regulatory interfaces
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 14001:2015
  • Maintain oversight of the programme of environmental inspections, surveillance, and performance monitoring
  • Develop, implement, and report on environmental performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Lead or support event and incident investigations
  • Review and optimise environmental department resources, processes, and activities
  • Ensure team members are assessed, appraised, trained, and developed
  • Manage environmental functions to agreed quality standards
  • Build strong working relationships with internal teams, contractors, the internal regulator, and external regulatory bodies
  • Promote construction experience feedback and embed learning

Requirements:

  • Degree-level qualification in an environmental or related discipline
  • Extensive experience leading Environmental & Sustainability teams on large, complex, and highly regulated construction projects
  • Broad construction field knowledge, ideally covering the full lifecycle-from civils through mechanical, electrical, installation, and commissioning
  • Detailed understanding of compliance requirements related to environmental permits, licences, and consents
  • Strong understanding of sustainability expectations, opportunities, and constraints on major infrastructure projects
  • Demonstrable leadership experience is essential
  • Extensive experience managing environmental issues on major infrastructure or engineering projects, working both from a client and principal contractor perspective
  • Proven stakeholder management, including building strong relationships with regulators and other public bodies

Nice to have:

  • Background in a technical or engineering discipline is advantageous
  • Experience driving sustainability initiatives within a large project environment
  • Experience within a highly regulated industry is desirable
