The Environment & Compliance Lead is responsible for overseeing the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental programs that support the safe and compliant operation of a large-scale, complex industrial facility. This position works closely with internal teams, contractors, community stakeholders, Indigenous partners, and regulatory bodies. The role requires a combination of strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic operational environment with evolving regulatory requirements.
Job Responsibility:
Lead a diverse team of environmental professionals to ensure regulatory compliance and strong environmental performance
Provide coaching, guidance, and direction to technical staff, fostering engagement, accountability, and professional development
Establish and reinforce environmental standards across operations, holding firm where compliance must be maintained
Ensure full compliance with all provincial and federal environmental regulations applicable to the facility
Serve as the main point of contact for regulatory bodies
coordinate audits, inspections, and reporting requirements
Interpret permit conditions and regulatory commitments and ensure consistent application across site operations
Support the maintenance and improvement of environmental management systems, including ISO 14001
Oversee terrestrial, marine, and atmospheric monitoring programs, including water quality, air quality, wildlife, fisheries offsets, wetlands, contamination, and receiving environment programs
Validate environmental data, prepare reports, and coordinate follow-up actions
Lead or participate in environmental incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are completed and verified
Participate in technical working groups with Indigenous communities and local stakeholders
Support external relations teams during consultations, community briefings, and issue resolution (e.g., noise, flare visibility, environmental concerns)
Maintain positive working relationships with community partners and environmental organizations
Work collaboratively with operations, health & safety, external relations, legal, and leadership teams to align environmental priorities
Support planning, risk assessments, and execution activities across the facility
Provide input on environmental considerations for future growth, expansion, or construction phases
Manage environmental program budgets, ensuring efficient allocation of resources
Oversee third-party consultants performing monitoring, surveys, remediation, and fieldwork
Review scopes of work, proposals, and performance of environmental services contractors
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or a related field
Certified Environmental Practitioner (C.E.P.) or equivalent professional designation is an asset
Minimum 10 years of experience in environmental roles within industrial, oil & gas, LNG, energy, or related sectors
Strong understanding of environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks within British Columbia
Experience with environmental monitoring programs, compliance management systems, and ISO 14001
Proven experience conducting and leading environmental incident investigations
Demonstrated success managing a technical team in a fast-paced operational environment
Ability to influence, coach, and guide both internal teams and external contractors
Strong communication skills and confidence to uphold environmental standards when challenged
Ability and willingness to relocate to Kitimat, BC
Comfortable working approximately 50% of the time in field-based activities
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively across diverse cultural and stakeholder groups
