Job Description

The Trainer & Skills Coach role is required to manage and develop a comprehensive and innovative teaching and learning experience in a variety of practical and theoretical skills within relevant apprenticeship standards, to include Mechatronics Maintenance Technician, Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician and Engineering Maintenance Technician. The role will require you to also ensure apprentices receive support, guidance and encouragement to succeed in their apprenticeship programme.

Job Responsibility

  • Deliver classroom theoretical engineering training aligned with awarding body and Skills England Engineering standard guidelines
  • Mark learner work and provide feedback
  • Manage classroom learner issues
  • Manage the classroom environment to ensure all spaces are compliant with MTC Training standards
  • Create learning resources
  • Create Scheme’s of work and lesson plans
  • Manage a caseload of engineering apprentices
  • Monitor the health, safety and welfare of apprentices
  • Provide end to end information, advice and guidance on skills development, Apprenticeship Assessment and career development
  • Monitor and record progress against the Standards
  • Conduct regular documented progress reviews with apprentices and their employers
  • Monitor apprentice off-the-job records
  • Complete any funding/MIS documentation
  • Plan and complete assessment of development competence qualifications
  • Plan and complete assessments of apprentice’s knowledge, skills and behaviours development
  • Use coaching methods
  • Build and maintain relationships with apprentices and their employers
  • Provide regular caseload progress updates to the Leadership Team
  • Collaborate with Business Development colleagues

Requirements

  • Level 3 Engineering qualification
  • Recognised teaching qualification or willing to gain this
  • Recognised Assessor qualification, such as A1 or Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement
  • Functional Skills Level 2 / GCSE's or equivalent in Maths and English grade C or above
  • Recognised Quality Assurance qualification, such as V1 or Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice
  • Recognised coaching qualification
  • Higher Education qualification (level 4 or above) in an Engineering discipline
  • Digital training qualifications relevant to education
  • Be able to operate across all MTC Training and client locations
  • Be customer and quality focused
  • Be approachable, and able to handle issues with sensitivity and confidentiality
  • Able to work independently with own initiative and in a team
  • Work under pressure to meet tight deadlines

  • Lead the generalist technician pool on a day to day basis, ensuring the right people are allocated to the right shows and tasks in line with business needs and agreed staffing levels
  • Act as onsite crew supervisor for allocated shows, taking responsibility for leading the generalist team during load ins, show runs, turnarounds and load outs, and ensuring work follows the agreed project plan, drawings and documentation prepared by the Project Manager and (technical) Specialists
  • Serve as the main on-site operational point of contact once the Project Manager has handed over, introducing yourself to the client and venue as the single point of contact for technical delivery for that phase/shift
  • Ensure that every show has a clearly designated single point of contact (Ops Manager, senior specialist or PM on major shows) and that this is understood by the crew and client. Utilises the billing system to coordinate invoicing activities and ensures accuracy
  • Promote and enforce safe systems of work on site, including HSE compliance, safe rigging and lifting practices, appropriate breaks and working hours, and escalation of any safety or welfare concerns
  • Support Project Managers by decoupling their presence from routine load-ins and load-outs wherever appropriate, enabling them to focus on planning and leading the overall project rather than acting as crew chief
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with venue staff, Project Managers, technical HODs/specialists, labour planning and warehouse teams to ensure smooth delivery and handovers
  • Oversee the deployment of pool technicians, coordinating with labour planning to balance show requirements, travel, TOIL, leave and training commitments
  • Proactively manage downtime: identify when pool technicians should support warehouse operations, attend training, or take TOIL, and ensure that unallocated time is used productively
  • Monitor utilisation and workload across the pool, flagging capacity constraints or over reliance on specific individuals, and proposing adjustments to resourcing as required
