Job Description:

At Cloudera, we empower people to transform complex data into clear and actionable insights. With as much data under management as the hyperscalers, we're the preferred data partner for the top companies in almost every industry. Powered by the relentless innovation of the open source community, Cloudera advances digital transformation for the world’s largest enterprises. The Storage Engineering Team at Cloudera builds the distributed storage components for the Cloudera Data Platform that serve the storage needs of over a thousand enterprise customers. The distributed storage platforms shipped by Cloudera include the Hadoop Distributed Filesystem and Apache Ozone. Ozone is an open source, highly scalable distributed Object store and filesystem that is designed to handle the demanding needs of analytics and cloud-native applications while scaling to thousands of nodes, billions of files and hundreds of Petabytes of data. Ozone is an Apache Software Foundation top-level project. We are looking for an experienced engineering manager with a strong technical background who has already worked on successful releases of software products of high technical complexity. In addition to HDFS and Ozone, the Storage Team also develops a high performance, open source implementation of the RAFT consensus protocol (Apache Ratis) which is used extensively within Ozone. Ozone is the next generation storage platform that is the base of Cloudera Data Platform for all of Cloudera’s on-prem customers. You get to work with world-class engineers on challenging systems problems like distributed consensus, fault tolerance, performance and security.

Job Responsibility:

  • Manage a world class team while attracting and retaining top engineers
  • Directly manage and mentor a team of 5-7 talented, seasoned dev and functional QE engineers
  • Take both technical ownership and people leadership responsibilities, ensuring execution over iterative releases
  • Provide hands-on technical guidance and mentorship to engineers across the full software development lifecycle
  • Hire, coach, and grow engineers while helping them advance in their careers
  • Drive architecture/design discussions and provide technical direction for the team
  • Collaborate closely with product management, quality engineering, UX designers, support engineering, and customers across different time zones
  • Foster a culture of continuous learning and diverse perspectives, enabling the team to explore new technologies and contribute to the wider data community
  • Partner with the Field and Support teams to ensure an exceptional enterprise level customer experience for new and existing Cloudera customers
  • Work primarily in our Bangalore office
  • Collaborate closely with the Storage Team members in US and EMEA locations

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of experience in software engineering
  • 1-2 years in an engineering management role
  • Demonstrable experience with the design, implementation, and operation of large-scale distributed systems, particularly in storage, file systems, databases, or cloud infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of fundamental storage concepts (e.g., consistency, replication, erasure coding, caching)
  • Proven track record of leading and managing high-performing engineering teams, demonstrating excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field

Nice to have:

  • Prior experience contributing to or leading large-scale open-source projects
  • Familiarity with the Apache Hadoop big data ecosystem (HDFS, YARN, Hive, Impala, Spark) or related distributed data frameworks
  • Experience with specific commercial or open-source distributed storage technologies (e.g., Ceph, Gluster, ZFS, S3-compatible systems)
  • Experience managing hybrid engineers
