Job Description

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead one of our Fintech Platform teams at Mews. You’ll manage a cross-functional team of 6–9 engineers building the financial backbone that supports almost €10 billion in payments every year. This platform is critical to how Mews handles money movement, reconciliation, and financial reporting, and plays a key role in enabling future scale. You’ll report to the Director of Engineering and work closely with a Product Manager and Product Designer. Together, you’ll guide your team to build reliable, scalable systems that other Fintech teams depend on, while maintaining high standards for correctness, auditability, and operational excellence. You won’t be coding, but you’ll need a strong engineering background. You should understand how modern cloud-based, distributed systems work and feel comfortable discussing architecture, reviewing technical decisions, and challenging trade-offs. More than anything, you’ll help your team stay focused, grow in maturity, and build systems that can be trusted in a regulated environment.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead a cross-functional team of 6–9 backend and platform engineers
  • Own the delivery and evolution of core financial systems such as ledger, reconciliation, and integrations with banks and external providers
  • Coach and mentor team members through regular 1:1s and feedback, with a focus on growing senior engineers
  • Define goals, priorities, and success metrics aligned with platform stability and long-term scalability
  • Work closely with Product, Design, and other Fintech teams (Acquiring, Payouts, Risk, Finance) to plan and deliver a shared roadmap
  • Ensure high standards of reliability, data consistency, and incident management across critical systems
  • Protect team focus and manage scope in a high-dependency environment
  • Contribute to hiring and long-term team growth

Requirements

  • Experience leading backend or platform engineering teams on modern cloud architectures
  • Strong understanding of distributed systems (e.g. event-driven architecture, data consistency, idempotency)
  • Experience working on financial systems, payments, or other high-reliability domains where correctness is critical
  • Ability to challenge technical decisions and guide architecture without being hands-on daily
  • Clear communication and ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Curiosity and a strong drive to learn and improve
  • Proven impact beyond your own team, especially in cross-team or platform contexts

What we offer

  • Participation in our company share program
  • Best-in-class parental leave (6 months fully paid for primary caregivers, 2 months for secondary, available within your first year)
  • Unlimited paid holiday
  • Work from anywhere - enjoy the flexibility to work from other countries for a few weeks each year through our compliant and flexible Workation policy
  • Relocation options available after 1 year
  • Monthly EDGE time - dedicated to Explore, Develop, Grow, and Elevate yourself
  • Flexible, hybrid working options
  • One-off home office setup budget to make your workspace your own
  • Monthly working-from-home and healthcare allowances (where local healthcare benefits are not in available)
