Job Description:

Public-facing APIs are a critical part of how 1Password safely exposes core capabilities to customers, partners, and internal consumers. Our API Platform team is responsible for building and operating the systems that make those interactions secure, reliable, and scalable. As the Engineering Manager for the API Platform team, you’ll be responsible for people leadership, delivery execution, and operational excellence for the public API platform. You’ll lead a group of backend engineers building the foundational systems that power all public-facing APIs at 1Password. You will act as the delivery and people DRI for the API platform, partnering closely with technical DRIs to balance near-term delivery with long-term platform integrity as the platform scales to support 1Password’s largest initiative of 2026.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend engineers building foundational API infrastructure, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
  • Define clear goals, manage team capacity, and ensure predictable, high-quality delivery while balancing speed, safety, and long-term maintainability
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and support career growth and development for team members
  • Create an environment where engineers can do their best work while maintaining high standards for reliability, security, and operational health
  • Own delivery of the public API platform, including shared services, core APIs, and platform capabilities used by teams across 1Password
  • Ensure APIs are secure, stable, and resilient as adoption grows
  • Drive execution against a multi-quarter roadmap
  • Ensure the team balances near-term feature delivery with long-lived API contracts and platform integrity
  • Uphold strong engineering practices across code quality, testing, operational readiness, and incident response
  • Partner with technical DRIs to ensure platform decisions align with long-term architectural direction
  • Support the team in making sound tradeoffs between speed, safety, and long-term maintainability
  • Promote operational excellence, including monitoring, observability, and resilience as platform usage scales

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of experience managing, leading, and mentoring software engineering teams
  • Experience building and operating API platforms, backend systems, or shared infrastructure
  • Strong understanding of API design, platform engineering, and developer-facing systems
  • Familiarity with authentication, authorization, and identity concepts (OAuth, IAM, scoped access, policy enforcement)
  • Proven ability to deliver complex technical initiatives through others, especially in ambiguous or evolving problem spaces
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to both engineering and non-technical stakeholders
What we offer:
  • Health, dental, 401k
  • Generous paid time off
  • Equity grant
  • Participation in incentive programs
  • Maternity and parental leave top-up programs
  • Four company-wide wellness days
  • Retirement matching program
  • Free 1Password account
  • Paid volunteer days
  • Employee-led inclusion and belonging programs and ERGs
  • Peer-to-peer recognition through Bonusly
