Amentum is seeking an experienced and licensed Engineer – 1st Class to support facility operations in the Washington, DC area. This senior-level stationary engineering role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of complex mechanical systems, including boilers, HVAC units, chillers, pumps, and electrical equipment. As the most senior engineering professional within the facility, the Engineer – 1st Class operates with a high degree of autonomy, provides technical leadership, ensures compliance with regulatory standards, and oversees junior engineering staff.
Job Responsibility:
Operate, maintain, and repair complex building systems, including boilers, HVAC systems, mechanical equipment, and electrical components
Conduct advanced troubleshooting and diagnostics on a wide range of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and corrective repairs to ensure safe and reliable operations
Ensure strict adherence to safety regulations, operational protocols, and all applicable federal, state, and local codes
Maintain operational logs, inspection records, and system documentation
Respond to emergency situations, system alarms, and equipment failures with urgency and expertise
Provide guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior engineers and maintenance personnel
Collaborate with facility managers, contractors, and project teams on upgrades, repairs, or capital improvements
Ensure optimal system performance to support mission-critical facility operations
Requirements:
Valid First Class Engineer License in MD or DC
Requires a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university or college
Active Secret Clearance
7-10 years of experience operating and maintaining boilers, HVAC systems, and mechanical/electrical equipment
Strong knowledge of building safety codes, environmental regulations, and industry best practices
Proven ability to perform complex troubleshooting across multiple trades
Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and equipment schematics
Demonstrated ability to work independently and make critical operational decisions
Nice to have:
Experience working within high-security, mission-critical, or government facilities
Knowledge of energy management practices and building automation systems
Previous supervisory or lead engineering experience
