Assists the physicians and registered nurses in providing technical care of the patients in the emergency department.
Job Responsibility:
Assists the physicians and registered nurses in providing technical care of the patients by performing phlebotomy and IV starts
Transports patients to other departments
Places patient on cardiac and vital sign monitors
Performs wound care
Inserts Foley catheters
Obtains lab specimens
Documents information/procedures and promptly communicates observations, concerns and needs of the patient to the registered nurse
Collaborates with physicians to support communications required to facilitate patient care
Coordinates and facilitates all forms of communications (phone, verbal, paging, electronic, fax, and EMS system)
Maintains a clean and safe working environment, following department safety policies and standard precautions
Monitors equipment and troubleshoots minor problems
Arranges repair of major malfunctions
Assists with the order entry process and charge entry
Compiles chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges and expirations
Obtains appropriate copies of medical records for transfers to nursing home and other health care facilities
Performs various patient positioning and transporting duties, which require lifting and pushing/pulling, while utilizing proper technique
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures
Requirements:
Nurse Aide in good standing as indicated with the State Registry in which the team member practices
Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) license issued by the state of Wisconsin
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Intravenous license issued by the state of Wisconsin
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic license issued by the state of Wisconsin
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate license issued by the state of Wisconsin
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Paramedic license issued by the state in which the team member practices
Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) needs to be obtained within 6 months unless department leader has determined it is not required
High School Graduate
Typically requires 1 year of experience in working as a CNA or EMT in an emergency department
Proficient computer skills and the ability to work with Electronic Health Record (EHR)
Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively with physicians, staff, patients and their families
Must maintain skill and recertification as required by regulation and organization
Ability to effectively manage time and priorities
High level of attention to detail
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, lift, squat, bend, reach above shoulders, and twist frequently during work shift
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs from floor to waist
Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs over the head
Must be able to carry up to 40 lbs a reasonable distance
Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs of force
Must be able to perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs with a second person present
Will be required to use foot pedals on carts or machines
Must have functional sight and hearing
