Job Description:

2026-2027 Elementary School Teacher position at Sojourner Truth Academy. The role involves planning and delivering instruction, assessing scholar progress, managing the classroom environment, communicating with families, and participating in professional development and school activities.

Requirements:

Plan and organize quality lesson plans, presentations, class activities, guest speakers, and assessments
Provide learning experiences that are culturally relevant and fun
Deliver appropriate instruction based on developmental stages
Diagnose, analyze and adjust lesson plans
Utilize a variety of instructional techniques and creative strategies
Provide individualized and small group instruction
Knowledgeable about classroom subject matters
Communicate regularly with Specialists
Implement current best practices
Budget class time effectively
Use technology to enhance instruction
Effectively utilize and manage designated classroom budget
Actively utilize Academic Coach and Director of Teaching and Learning
Monitor scholar academic progress and personal growth
Conduct formal and informal assessments
Devise written and oral assignments and tests
Systematically measure scholar performance
Maintain individual scholar records, files and reports
Complete report cards twice a year
Proctor standardized and internal tests
Supervise scholars during recess and escort scholars
Establish and maintain high expectations
Establish and maintain a safe, clean and orderly learning environment
Establish and maintain standards of scholar behavior
Create learning experiences that build confidence
Manage classroom environment
Establish a class environment that fosters integrated learning
Anticipate and deescalate classroom conflicts
Conduct social conferencing with scholars
Uphold and enforce school rules
Establish rules and problem solving guidelines
Encourage scholars
Provide direction to educational assistants, Americorps volunteers, Reading Corps volunteers or student teachers
Treat parents as the scholars first and primary teacher
Be responsible for ongoing parent contact
Refer scholars to the MTSS team
Identify scholar needs and cooperate with parents and other professional staff
Communicate with parents through conferences and other means
Assists parents and community members
Build and maintain positive, professional relationships
Utilize the Director of Family and Scholar Life
Maintain professional competence through professional development
Research current best practices
Make effective use of community resources
Actively participate in weekly PLC meetings, weekly coaching meetings and data meetings
Actively participate in school activities
Monitor playground
Ability to think, learn and concentrate
Ability to sit and work at a computer keyboard for extended periods
Ability to stoop, kneel, reach, and bend at the waist
Ability to perform general office administrative activities
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
