The Independent Advisory Council (IAC) gives critical, independent expert advice directly to the Board to bring the real-world experiences of participants, families, and carers into the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). As the First Nations Independent Advisor, you will play a vital role in supporting the IAC's First Nations Reference Group.
Job Responsibility
Drafting high-quality, formal pieces of advice, plain-English discussion papers, and reports for the Board and external reviews
Support and maintain a culturally safe space for First Nations reference group members
Lead quarterly mentoring and capability sessions for members
Work alongside two other Independent Advisors and the IAC Secretariat to facilitate focus groups and research
Attend reference group meetings and support the Principal Member in high-level stakeholder discussions
Requirements
Deep understanding of the First Nations community and the unique intersecting lived experiences of First Nations people with disabilities
Solid knowledge of how the NDIS works, specifically its strengths, barriers, and operational realities for First Nations participants
Nice to have
Experience writing strategic advice, papers, or reports for government organisations using clear, accessible, and plain English
Proven capability to form, grow, and maintain strong professional and community relationships across diverse groups
The ability to navigate changing legislative, political, or operational environments and apply professional judgment to manage risks
Relevant qualifications in disability, health, social sciences, or public policy are highly regarded
