Job Description:

CHS is seeking a Director of State Government Affairs to develop, lead and execute strategies to influence state-level public policy and legislation. The Director will identify legislative and regulatory developments that impact CHS, create opportunities for engagement, and drive positive policy outcomes.

Job Responsibility:

  • Develop a proactive state and local policy strategy with business leaders, policy, communications, legal and operations experts
  • Build and maintain CHS relationships with key government officials and manage state consultants in key operating states
  • Represent and maximize CHS’s involvement in coalitions and trade associations to advance CHS interests and shape their respective agendas
  • Develop a deep understanding of business priorities to anticipate and provide timely updates and analysis of emerging trends
  • Work with internal teams to evaluate business impact and guide reactive and proactive work on state legislative and regulatory actions
  • Work with issue experts to draft testimony, comments and advance policy positions on priority issues
  • Work collaboratively on advocacy events and high-impact initiatives within the state to ensure a cohesive approach to policy issues and messaging

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Policy, Political Science, Business Administration) or equivalent practical experience
  • Minimum of 10+ of managing policy issues at the state and local level (in-house role or combined experience in state government, state lobbying or relevant trade associations)
  • Understanding and deployment of state advocacy and engagement strategies
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
  • An operational mindset for managing internal and external processes and experience providing strategic counsel to senior leaders
  • A collaborative approach to working across teams
  • Familiarity with public policy issues related to agriculture and energy are a plus
