The School of Music at Eastern Kentucky University invites applications for a part-time adjunct faculty position as Interim Director of Orchestras for the 2026–2027 academic year. This position carries primary responsibility for the artistic direction and conduct of the EKU Symphony Orchestra, including rehearsal preparation, concert programming, and performance leadership. Additional responsibilities commensurate with the candidate's expertise may be assigned, and may include conducting secondary ensembles, coaching chamber groups, or teaching applied or classroom-based course sections. The EKU Symphony Orchestra is a mixed ensemble of undergraduate and graduate string, wind, brass, and percussion students and serves as a central ensemble experience in the School's performance curriculum. The successful candidate will bring demonstrated experience conducting orchestral repertoire and a collaborative approach to working with student musicians. This is a one-year adjunct appointment and does not carry benefits or tenure-track status.
Job Responsibility:
Conduct the EKU Symphony Orchestra, including leading all scheduled rehearsals, preparing and programming concert repertoire, and directing public performances throughout the academic year.
Fulfill additional duties as assigned commensurate with expertise, which may include conducting secondary ensembles, coaching chamber music, or teaching applied or classroom-based course sections.
Requirements:
An earned Doctorate in Music (DMA or PhD) in Conducting, Orchestral Studies, or a closely related field from an accredited institution is preferred. Candidates holding a Master's degree with significant, verifiable professional conducting experience at the collegiate or professional orchestral level may be considered.
Demonstrated experience as a conductor of orchestral ensembles at the collegiate, pre-professional, or professional level is required.
