The city of Somerville is in search of a Director of Inspectional Services. The Director of Inspectional Services oversees the city of Somerville’s Building, Health, and Weights and Measures divisions, supervising inspectors to ensure compliance with building, health, plumbing/gas, electrical, and related regulations. The role provides strategic leadership by developing departmental policies, managing operations, and preparing and administering the annual budget. Responsibilities include interpreting building and zoning regulations, advising the Mayor on public health and safety code enforcement, and leading the Neighborhood Impact Team to address problem properties. The Director also collaborates with residents, business owners, developers, contractors, elected officials, and community groups to resolve concerns and advance projects. Additional duties include presenting departmental initiatives before the Board of Aldermen and other government bodies, coordinating the department’s licensing and permitting system through CitizenServe, and ensuring effective service delivery. The position typically requires a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field and at least 10 years of experience in municipal government, inspectional services, or code enforcement. Performs other related duties that may be assigned.
