We are looking for an experienced Director of Human Resources to lead and strengthen HR operations in Des Moines, Iowa. This position is suited for a hands-on leader who can bring structure to essential people processes, support managers with practical guidance, and maintain a high standard of compliance across the employee lifecycle. The ideal candidate will combine operational discipline with a service-focused approach to improve efficiency, consistency, and employee support throughout the organization.
Job Responsibility
Direct daily human resources activities to ensure policies, procedures, and workflows are applied consistently and effectively across the organization
Establish and refine HR documentation, standardized forms, and operating practices that improve accuracy, organization, and team efficiency
Oversee employee records and personnel documentation while safeguarding confidentiality and maintaining reliable access to required information
Manage core employment processes such as onboarding, separations, status updates, and HR data administration with a strong focus on detail
Coordinate payroll and benefits-related HR support as needed, ensuring timely communication and accurate processing
Monitor adherence to federal, state, and local employment requirements, including I-9 administration, audit readiness, and record retention practices
Track mandatory training, certifications, and compliance deadlines to help the organization remain current on requirements
Maintain HR system data, produce workforce and compliance reports, and identify opportunities to streamline manual tasks through improved tools or automation
Serve as a primary resource for employees and leaders by responding to HR process questions and helping apply policies consistently
Support recruitment activities through recruiting coordination, interview scheduling, and new employee logistics
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred
HR certifications (e.g., SHRM or PHR) are a plus, but not required
Prior experience in HR, with exposure to operations, compliance, and generalist responsibilities
Experience supporting or improving HR processes, systems, or documentation is helpful
Working knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices
Strong attention to detail with a process-driven and organized approach
Ability to balance day-to-day execution with supporting broader team or business needs
