Job Description

We are seeking a strategic Director of Human Resources with proven leadership experience in the education industry to join our organization. This contract-to-permanent role offers the chance to lead HR strategy, drive organizational development, and ensure full compliance in a dynamic education environment. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in educational workforce dynamics, union relations, educator talent acquisition/retention, and navigating the unique regulatory landscape of the education sector.

Job Responsibility

  • Develop and execute comprehensive HR strategies that align with the organization’s mission, goals, and priorities in the education sector
  • Lead all aspects of employee relations, fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work culture tailored to educators, administrators, and support staff
  • Design, implement, and manage competitive compensation and benefits programs to attract, retain, and motivate top talent in a competitive education talent market
  • Ensure full compliance with federal, state (California), and local employment laws, as well as education-specific regulations, including those related to credentialing, funding programs, and government contracts
  • Collaborate with state government agencies, education departments, and relevant programs to maintain adherence to standards and resolve any compliance matters
  • Oversee HR compliance, risk management, and policy development with a focus on education industry nuances
  • Provide strategic guidance and leadership to the HR team while serving as a trusted advisor to senior leadership
  • Monitor HR metrics and workforce analytics to drive data-informed decisions and continuous improvement
  • Lead organizational development initiatives to enhance employee engagement, performance management, and professional development for education professionals
  • Act as a key liaison between the organization and state/local government entities, education boards, or regulatory bodies as needed

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (Master’s degree or HR certification preferred)
  • 8+ years of progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 4+ years at the Director or VP level
  • Significant prior experience in the education industry (K-12 districts, charter schools, higher education institutions, or edtech organizations) is required
  • Deep knowledge of California employment law and education-specific regulations
  • Proven track record in compensation strategy, benefits administration, employee relations, and talent management within education settings
  • Experience navigating union environments or collective bargaining (preferred)
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to influence at all levels of the organization
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience with government contracts or publicly funded education programs is a strong plus
