Job Description

One Firefly is seeking a Director of Finance and Operations to serve as the financial engine and operational oversight leader of the company. This high-visibility, high-impact role is part of our Executive Management Team (EMT) and focuses on financial discipline and operational efficiency in a service-based business where human capital is our largest and most important asset. In this role, you will own the day-to-day financial operations of the business, driving forecasting and financial clarity. You will also provide operational oversight to our Project Management team and serve as the primary financial liaison to our fractional CFO. This is an ideal opportunity for a sharp, finance-focused individual with service industry experience ready to step into a true leadership seat and drive meaningful impact.

Job Responsibility

  • Own and maintain accurate, timely financial reporting, delivering clear and actionable insight across the P&L
  • Build, maintain and continuously improve rolling forecasts (revenue, margin and cash flow)
  • Monitor daily cash flow and proactively manage our financial position, balancing liabilities, capital expenditures, and owner distributions
  • Drive the annual budgeting process, maintaining ongoing budget-vs-actual tracking across all departments
  • Partner with Sales and Operations to ensure pipeline, onboarding, and churn are accurately reflected in forecasts
  • Serve as primary liaison to the fractional CFO
  • preparing materials, surfacing risks, and ensuring clean data for strategic decision making
  • Partner with external CPA on tax-related matters
  • Provide financial coaching and oversight to the Accounting team
  • serve as backup for transactional support when needed
  • Oversee the Project Management team with a financial and efficiency lens, ensuring labor is deployed profitably across our client base
  • Lead and develop the Project Management team leads — providing coaching, goal-setting, accountability, and performance oversight
  • Ensure the team’s labor and resource models are functioning effectively and that capacity decisions align with financial targets and forecast assumptions
  • Monitor utilization rates, billable-to-non-billable ratios, and labor margin across service lines
  • Identify and escalate risks early, before they impact financial performance
  • Partner with the Executive Vice President to align labor efficiency with service quality and client outcomes
  • Serve as an active member of our Executive Management Team (EMT)
  • Partner with department leaders to drive budget accountability and financial decision-making
  • Provide financial guidance on client-related matters that have cost or margin implications
  • Support People Operations on payroll-related financial approvals and workforce cost planning
  • Proactively identify risks, gaps, and opportunities

Requirements

  • 7+ years of progressive finance experience
  • At least 3 years at a Controller, Finance Manager or similar level
  • Background in a services-based business (agency, consulting, staffing or managed services strongly preferred)
  • Proven track record owning a financial close process and delivering clean, timely reporting
  • Experience leading and developing team members, including coaching, performance management, and driving accountability across both finance and cross-functional teams
  • Strong understanding of service business economics, including utilization, billable rates, capacity planning, labor margin
  • Proven ability to build and maintain financial models, forecasts, and budget-vs-actual analyses
  • Strong communicator who can translate financial data into clear guidance with actionable insights for non-finance stakeholders
  • Demonstrates both tactical and strategic use of AI, utilizing tools to improve productivity while identifying opportunities to enhance financial processes, reporting, and operational efficiency
  • Comfortable managing up (to a CEO and fractional CFO) and managing down (to a production team with no/limited finance background)
  • Proactive and forward-thinking
  • identifies issues before they surface in reporting
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • enjoys operating in a growing company where processes are still being built
  • High ownership mentality
  • treats the company’s financial health as personally important
  • Thrives in a remote-first environment with strong written communication and self-management
