Job Description

As the Director of Energy Storage Design, you will lead and scale Torus' design engineering organization across commercial, industrial, and utility-scale projects. You will manage a team of Energy Storage Design Engineers responsible for site assessments, preliminary system designs, and customer relationships from initial site visit through installation completion. This role requires building design standards, customer handoff processes, and quality control systems to support aggressive growth targets while maintaining the highest technical standards and customer satisfaction.

Job Responsibility

  • Recruit, hire, train, and manage a team of Energy Storage Design Engineers across low-voltage (208v/480v) and medium-voltage applications
  • Develop technical training programs covering site assessment, system design, NEC compliance, customer communication, and Torus product specifications
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, customer focus, and continuous improvement
  • Develop and maintain standardized design processes, templates, and calculation tools for commercial, industrial, and utility projects
  • Establish quality control checkpoints and peer review processes to ensure code-compliant, constructible designs
  • Track and analyze key performance metrics including design cycle time, installation issues, and customer satisfaction
  • Review and approve complex system designs and provide technical guidance on challenging applications
  • Resolve technical escalations from customers, installation teams, or regulatory authorities
  • Collaborate with product engineering to provide field feedback for continuous product improvement
  • Partner with sales to scope projects, develop technical proposals, and present solutions to customers

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related technical field
  • 10+ years of professional experience including 5+ years in leadership or management roles
  • Proven track record managing and scaling technical teams (5+)
  • Extensive experience with commercial, industrial, or utility-scale electrical system design
  • Experience with energy storage systems, renewable energy, or grid interconnection projects
  • Strong project management skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to influence cross-functional teams and present to customers
  • Proficiency with electrical design software, calculation tools, and project management systems
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record

Nice to have

  • Experience scaling design operations in high-growth environments
  • Background in medium-voltage (4-12.5kV) power systems or utility interconnection
  • Familiarity with Aurora, PVsyst, or similar renewable energy design software
