The Director of Base Camp & Family Camp Programs supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the direction of the Executive Director, this position will provide leadership, support, and program direction to summer base camp, the leadership development program and family weekends at YMCA Camp Greenville. The director will serve as part of the program leadership team at camp to provide the highest level of service possible in all areas of program staffing, design, delivery, health and safety management and budget control.
Job Responsibility:
Manage summer and family camp programs in alignment with the mission of camp to ensure high-quality program delivery, compliance with best practices, and enrollment growth toward capacity
Plan, coordinate, and implement the summer base camp program, including program schedules, camper behavior management, and daily operational oversight
Oversee planning and coordination of family camp programs through supervision of the full-time Program Manager
Oversee planning and coordination of the Leadership Development Program through supervision of the full-time Camp Engagement & Leadership Manager
Establish new program activities and expand programming within the community in accordance with Association and branch strategic plans
Assist, in collaboration with program leadership, with recruiting, training, supervising, and scheduling staff and volunteers for summer camp and family camp weekends
Provide leadership, guidance, and accountability to program staff to support effective program delivery and camper experience
Serve as Administrator on Duty as assigned
Manage program-related aspects of the Department 03 (Fall/Spring) budget, including income and expense planning, monthly projections, variance reporting, and recovery planning as needed
Assist with the Department 04 (Summer) budget
Support grant-funded programs by providing reports and implementing programs in accordance with secured grant requirements
Assist with parent communication and facilitate camper and family connection opportunities throughout the year, including branch events and community outreach
Represent Camp Greenville at special events, community outreach opportunities, and assigned branch and Association committees
Develop and maintain relationships with school district administrators, parent groups, and community organizations related to camp programs
Maintain relationships with relevant professional organizations, including the YMCA and the American Camp Association (ACA)
Assist with promotion of Camp Greenville programs in collaboration with branch and Association marketing and promotion plans, with an emphasis on family camp offerings
Support the Annual Campaign by assisting with fundraising contacts and meeting an individual campaigner goal of $2,000
Maintain assigned office hours at Camp Greenville as directed by the supervisor
Participate in meetings, trainings, and off-site committees to enhance overall camp programming and professional development
Work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, as required by program needs
Ensure all program standards and safety procedures are met, including compliance with Praesidium, American Camp Association, and YMCA child protection standards
Ensure completion of required abuse risk management training for self, employees, and volunteers
Oversee employee and volunteer screening and use appropriate screening tools to assess abuse risk
Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
Follow mandated reporting requirements
Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
Follow employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk
Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk
Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with consumers
Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk
Respond quickly to policy and procedure violation using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures
Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors
Follow mandated reporting requirements
Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumer from abuse
Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in recreation, education, or related field, or equivalent years’ experience
Minimum of two (3) years’ experience or similar knowledge of camping and childcare management
Minimum of two (2) years supervisory experience of year-round/full time staff
Minimum of three (3) years of overnight summer camping experience
Must have good interpersonal, public relations and communications skills, including the ability to make oral presentations
Prior experience in budget development and management
A full understanding of YMCA philosophy and a desire to live, work, and perform work duties in a manner consistent with such
Skills in outdoor education, community program development, and fund raising
Must be able to effectively work with and motivate other staff and volunteers
Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
Incumbent must complete mandatory training of New Staff Orientation, BBP/Child Abuse Prevention and CPR/1st Aid/AED trainings within 30 days of employment
Position will be required to work extra hours, including in a span of seven days a week in the summer months. Non-summer months will be normal office hours including mornings and/or afternoons.
