A large, mission-driven public institution is seeking a Director of Accounting Services to provide leadership and oversight for core accounting operations within the finance division. This role is responsible for Accounting, Accounts Payable, and Payroll, with direct supervisory responsibility for the Accounting function. The position partners closely with senior leadership and serves as a financial consultant to support organizational goals.
Job Responsibility:
Lead, recruit, train, supervise, and develop accounting staff
Organize and prioritize accounting operations and assign workload
Establish performance expectations and conduct periodic performance reviews
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes
Develop, update, and implement accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls
Collaborate with accounts payable and payroll leadership to ensure consistent and compliant practices
Ensure timely and accurate internal and external financial reporting
Prepare and submit required regulatory and compliance filings
Serve as lead contact for internal and external audit processes
Monitor financial performance and provide reporting and analysis to senior leadership
Support the evaluation, implementation, and ongoing improvement of financial and ERP systems
Oversee financial systems reporting, data extraction, and system integrations
Participate in strategic planning and financial planning initiatives
Serve on cross-functional or organizational committees as requested
Perform other related duties consistent with the scope of the role
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field required
CPA, MBA, or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Public Administration preferred
Minimum of six (6) years of progressive accounting experience, including: Preparation of monthly financial statements
At least three (3) years directing an accounting function and supervising staff
Experience interacting with senior leadership and advising management
Experience in nonprofit, public sector, or similarly regulated environments
Working knowledge of accounts payable and payroll operations
Experience evaluating and implementing accounting controls, policies, and procedures
Strong experience with ERP systems, financial reporting tools, and data extraction
Participation in strategic or organizational planning efforts
Strong communication, interpersonal, and consultative skills
