Job Description

The Director of Estimating is responsible for leading and managing the estimating function to support the organization’s growth, profitability, and strategic objectives. This role oversees the development of accurate, competitive, and timely cost estimates for projects while ensuring alignment with operational capabilities, market conditions, and financial targets. The Director of Estimating partners closely with executive leadership, operations, business development, and finance to drive successful bid strategies and project outcomes.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the estimating team
  • Establish and implement estimating standards, processes, and best practices
  • Align estimating strategies with company goals
  • Participate in strategic planning
  • Oversee the preparation and review of detailed cost estimates, budgets, and proposals
  • Ensure estimates reflect current market pricing, labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and project risks
  • Manage bid schedules
  • Review project scopes, specifications, and drawings
  • Partner with business development to support client presentations, proposal development, and bid strategy
  • Work closely with operations and project management
  • Build and maintain relationships with subcontractors, vendors, and industry partners
  • Collaborate with finance on cost tracking, forecasting, and margin analysis
  • Identify risks, contingencies, and value engineering opportunities
  • Support contract reviews and commercial terms
  • Conduct post-bid and post-project reviews
  • Implement and optimize estimating tools, systems, and data analytics
  • Develop cost databases, benchmarking, and reporting dashboards

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, or a related field preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive estimating experience, with leadership responsibility
  • Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and cost structures
  • Proven experience managing complex and high-value projects
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and negotiation skills
  • Proficiency in estimating software and Microsoft Office applications
  • Strong financial acumen and business mindset
