We are seeking a Director, Data Engineering & Analytics to be a hands-on, individual contributor leading the design, implementation, and evolution of Apogee’s new enterprise Data Lakehouse and analytics ecosystem. This role will be the primary internal owner of our Data Lakehouse, delivered in partnership with a Systems Integrator, and will initially focus on Clinical Development and Clinical Operations use cases (e.g., study oversight, medical monitoring, operational performance). Over time, the platform will expand to support Technical Operations, Commercial, Medical Affairs, and Finance.
Job Responsibility:
Serve as the primary owner of Apogee’s Data Lakehouse architecture, roadmap, and implementation
Define the data platform to support Clinical Development and Clinical Operations, with a clear path to extend to Technical Operations, Commercial, Medical Affairs, and Finance
Design and oversee data ingestion, transformation, and storage for structured and semi-structured data from key Apogee sources
Establish and maintain subject area data models and semantic layers tailored to clinical and operational use cases
Ensure the platform is designed and operated in alignment with Apogee’s GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, SOX Controls, and other regulatory/compliance expectations
Design, build, and maintain end-to-end data pipelines (ingestion, transformation, curation) into the Data Lakehouse
Develop and maintain data models that serve Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, and later Tech Ops and Commercial / Med Affairs / Finance
Implement data quality, lineage, and metadata practices
Contribute to defining data governance at Apogee
Design and build dashboards / analytic views that support key functional area use cases
Define reusable data marts and semantic models that enable self-service analytics
Act as a trusted partner to Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Biometrics, Medical Monitoring, and other functions
Work closely within IT (Infrastructure and Security), QA, and business stakeholders to support any required validation, testing, and controlled releases
Communicate roadmaps, status, risks, and dependencies clearly and regularly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Drive adoption and literacy around the Data Lakehouse and BI tools by developing documentation, providing training/enablement for key users, and promoting best practices
Help define the future operating model for data and analytics at Apogee
Requirements:
10+ years of experience in data engineering, data platform, or analytics roles, with meaningful experience owning or leading a modern cloud data platform (Data Lakehouse or cloud data warehouse)
Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent professional experience) in Life Sciences, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
Proven track record as a hands-on senior level individual contributor
Experience with cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Databricks, Snowflake, BigQuery, or similar) and modern data stack components
Strong expertise in data modeling and ETL/ELT for analytics and reporting
Experience working closely with integration teams (ideally with MuleSoft or similar)
Prior experience in biotech / pharma / life sciences is strongly preferred, especially supporting Clinical Development, Clinical Operations, Biometrics, or Medical Monitoring
Familiarity with data from CROs and clinical systems (e.g., EDC, CTMS, safety, lab, statistical outputs)
Experience working in regulated environments (e.g., GxP, 21 CFR Part 11, HIPAA) and supporting audit/inspection readiness is highly desirable
Exposure to Apogee-relevant systems is a plus (e.g., Veeva Vault applications, Egnyte GxP repositories, SAS server, NetSuite)
Strong proficiency in SQL and at least one data engineering language (e.g., Python or Scala)
Hands-on experience with data pipeline and orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow, Azure Data Factory, dbt, or similar) and CI/CD concepts for data workloads
Solid understanding of data architecture patterns (data lakes, lakehouses, warehouses, dimensional modeling, semantic layers)
Experience integrating data from file repositories (SharePoint, Egnyte) and external partners (CROs, cloud vendors, etc.)
Strong understanding of data security, privacy, and access control in an enterprise setting
Strategic yet pragmatic
able to start from a greenfield environment and design a phased, realistic roadmap
Excellent communication and storytelling skills
Demonstrated ability to lead through influence
High ownership and bias for action, comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth clinical-stage biotech environment
Interest in eventually building and leading a small data team
Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%
