Allied Universal® is hiring a Director of Health and Welfare Benefits and Leave of Absence. The Director of Benefits and LOA is responsible for the strategic leadership, design, administration, compliance, and continuous improvement of the organization’s employee health, welfare, wellbeing, and leave programs.
Job Responsibility
Oversee medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, voluntary benefits, wellness, EAP, and wellbeing programs
Evaluate market trends, benchmarking data, and emerging healthcare solutions to maintain competitive offerings
Lead annual benefits planning, renewals, and open enrollment processes
Design and implement employee communication and engagement strategies to improve benefits understanding and utilization
Drive innovation in benefits delivery, digital tools, and employee experience
Provide strategic oversight for all leave programs, including Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), state leave laws, paid family leave, military leave, workers’ compensation coordination, and company-sponsored leave programs
Ensure consistent administration of leave policies across jurisdictions and employee populations
Partner with Legal and HR leadership on complex accommodations, return-to-work cases, and escalated employee matters
Monitor leave trends, operational effectiveness, and compliance risks
Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, ADA, Section 125, and related laws
Work closely with benefit brokers and vendors to ensure timely and accurate ACA reporting compliance, 5500 filings, IRS and DOL filings and audit responses, and all other benefit related compliance obligations
ensure timely communications to management in advance of any compliance concerns and issues
Manage audits, reporting requirements, nondiscrimination testing, and plan documentation
Collaborate with internal and external counsel on regulatory changes and policy updates
Mitigate organizational risk through strong governance and controls
Analyze claims experience, utilization trends, and cost drivers to recommend strategic improvements
Lead vendor selection, negotiations, performance management, and service delivery reviews
Partner with consultants, brokers, carriers, TPAs, and leave administrators to optimize outcomes and service quality
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing benefits and leave administration team
Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership on benefits administration and workforce wellbeing initiatives
Collaborate with Talent Acquisition and Total Rewards teams to strengthen the organization’s employer value proposition
Support mergers, acquisitions, integrations, and organizational changes related to benefits and leave programs
Requirements
Must possess one of the following: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field
Associate’s degree in Business, Human Resources, or a related field with a minimum of seven (7) years of leadership experience managing benefits teams and enterprise programs
High school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of ten (10) years of leadership experience managing benefits teams and enterprise programs
Minimum of ten (10) years of progressive experience in health and welfare benefits administration and leave management
Minimum of five (5) years of leadership experience managing benefits teams and enterprise programs
Experience managing self-funded and fully insured healthcare plans
Exceptional communication, presentation, and stakeholder management abilities
Experience with vendor and broker management
Experience communicating effectively with the Department of Labor and Internal Revenue Service
Deep expertise in benefits compliance regulations and leave laws
thorough understanding of state and federal regulations relating to benefit plans and all applicable laws relating to benefit administration (including ERISA, COBRA, and healthcare reform), and be able to effectively work within company policies and state/federal laws
Strong analytical, financial, and vendor management skills
High level of experience and proficiency using automated systems to administer benefit programs, and strong working knowledge of current technologies used in progressive organizations, with ability to identify new solutions and make recommendations
In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local leave laws, including Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) and their related frameworks
Outstanding interpersonal skills and impeccable oral and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to create and deliver presentations to executive management in a clear, compelling, and confident manner
Demonstrated ability to take initiative, successfully handle and prioritize multiple competing assignments and effectively manage deadlines
Highly organized and able to keep the management team on track with required information available at all times
Highly proficient and fully functional in all Microsoft Office applications, with advanced Excel skills
Ability to create and interpret reports related to benefit costs, P&L impact, and also generate internal documents for Human Resources, finance, sales, and operations to use for budgeting and client communications
Demonstrated ability to use good independent judgment and maintain correspondence, discussions, and materials with utmost discretion
Proactive problem solving skills
Ability to work with minimal supervision and cooperatively work with field and branch leadership in a productive yet authoritative manner
