A leading organisation within the polymer and materials sector is seeking a skilled Varnish Chemist to join their Research & Development function. This role supports the creation and optimisation of specialist varnish systems used within high‑performance printing applications. It's an excellent opportunity for an experienced chemist who enjoys hands‑on formulation, resin synthesis, and technical problem‑solving. Job Responsibility

  • Designing, developing and refining oxidatively‑curing varnish systems for printing applications
  • Selecting and assessing raw materials to ensure performance, compliance, and cost‑effectiveness
  • Conducting resin synthesis, preparing varnishes and inks, and carrying out analytical and print performance testing
  • Identifying and resolving formulation challenges to enhance product consistency and durability
  • Supporting regulatory compliance and contributing to environmentally responsible, low‑VOC developments
  • Working closely with colleagues across R&D and production, managing multiple projects and communicating progress clearly

Requirements

  • Strong experience in formulation and resin synthesis
  • Solid understanding of polymer chemistry and formulation science
  • Practical laboratory experience in synthesis, testing, and product evaluation
  • Awareness of pigment, solvent, additive, and varnish interactions
  • Degree (BSc or higher) in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or a related field

  • Operate analytical equipment in the laboratory, with the expectation of becoming an expert in sophisticated instruments such as particle size analyzer, TGA, DSC, FTIR, optical microscope, and surface tension analyzer
