Job Description

This role is at-will and OpenAI reserves the right to modify base pay and other compensation components at any time based on individual performance, team or company results, or market conditions. OpenAI’s mission is to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. Our Communications team includes External Communications, Internal Communications, Events, Design, Community & Social, and other strategic comms functions. This team’s ethos is to support OpenAI's mission and goals by clearly and authentically explaining our technology, values, and approach to safely building powerful AI. Codex and the OpenAI developer platform underpin how more than 4 million developers build with OpenAI and are shaping the future of development. The way we communicate about these products drives adoption, trust, and long-term relationships with the developer ecosystem. In this role, you'll lead product communications for Codex & the OpenAI developer platform - two of OpenAI’s most technical products to help inform how builders, startups, and the broader developer community build with OpenAI. You’ll define how we introduce new developer tools, models and products through launches, ongoing product storytelling, media, events, and ecosystem moments. You’ll work closely with product, engineering, research, product marketing, developer experience, social and events to translate complex concepts into narratives that resonate across the developer community. This is both a strategy-setting and hands-on execution role. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

Job Responsibility

  • Own product communications for Codex and the OpenAI developer platform, from major launches to sustained, day-to-day storytelling
  • Develop clear, differentiated narratives for key developer audiences, including independent builders, startups, and enterprise developers that put our products into context
  • Translate complex technical capabilities into communications that help educate and inspire
  • Partner closely with product marketing and product teams to align messaging, positioning, and launch strategy
  • Help align our developer events strategy to our product priorities, including OpenAI-hosted moments (e.g., community meetups, hackathons) and presence at high-impact third-party conferences
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with developer, technology, and business media, as well as creators and influencers in the developer ecosystem
  • Prepare executives, engineers, and product leaders with messaging and materials for interviews, briefings, and speaking engagements
  • Identify, shape, and package data and customer proof points that demonstrate real-world adoption and impact
  • Stay closely informed on the competitive landscape to inform positioning and proactive communications

Requirements

  • 6–8+ years of experience in product communications, developer communications, or technical storytelling roles, ideally in B2B technology or platforms
  • Strong technical intuition—comfortable engaging deeply with APIs, developer tools, and system-level concepts
  • Experience supporting or leading complex product launches across multiple channels and audiences
  • A clear, disciplined writer and editor who values accuracy and who writes with a natural voice that connects with people
  • Comfortable operating with autonomy while collaborating closely with cross-functional partners
  • Strong judgment around audience, timing, and tone—especially when communicating with developers
  • Excited by developer communities and how builders discover, evaluate, and adopt new tools
  • Motivated by OpenAI’s mission and thoughtful about the role communications play in building trust in powerful technologies

What we offer

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance for you and your family, with employer contributions to Health Savings Accounts
  • Pre-tax accounts for Health FSA, Dependent Care FSA, and commuter expenses (parking and transit)

  • 13+ paid company holidays, and multiple paid coordinated company office closures throughout the year for focus and recharge, plus paid sick or safe time (1 hour per 30 hours worked, or more, as required by applicable state or local law)
  • Mental health and wellness support
  • Employer-paid basic life and disability coverage
  • Annual learning and development stipend to fuel your professional growth
