An engineering organisation in the water sector is seeking a Mechanical Design Lead to oversee multidisciplinary design projects and guide a growing team. This role spans concept design through delivery, ensuring high‑quality solutions for water and wastewater treatment infrastructure across Ireland.

Job Responsibility

  • Lead and coordinate design teams delivering mechanical designs for water/wastewater projects
  • Manage full design lifecycle from feasibility to detailed design, implementation, and handover
  • Act as main technical contact for clients and project stakeholders
  • Oversee and approve mechanical layouts, equipment specifications, and P&IDs
  • Ensure designs meet industry standards, regulations, and internal quality requirements
  • Mentor and support engineers, contributing to capability development across the team
  • Work with senior management on resource planning and performance management
  • Promote innovation, standardisation, and continuous improvement within the design function

Requirements

  • Level 8/9 degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 7+ years' experience in mechanical design, ideally within the water sector
  • Proven leadership experience managing design teams and project delivery
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, and process plant layout
  • Proficiency with design tools, modelling software, and engineering calculations
  • Excellent communication, coordination, and organisational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and deliver high‑quality outputs
  • Practical site exposure advantageous

  • Lead multiple projects through schematic design, design development, construction documents, construction administration and turn-over as Project Lead and technical domain lead for the Civil, Structural, Landscape, Architecture (CSLA) disciplines on new builds (greenfield), leased facilities, and retrofit projects
  • Lead end-to-end project planning including requirements gathering, defining scope, identifying key milestones, and allocating resources. Serve as the primary technical liaison between business stakeholders and design engineering teams
  • Set clear goals and expectations for teams, regularly tracking progress and communicating status updates to stakeholders. Ensure all project decisions support Meta’s broader organizational goals and technical vision
  • Facilitate regular project meetings, retrospectives, and reviews to drive transparency and continuous improvement
