Robert Half Legal is exclusively partnering with a rapidly growing, industry leading corporation located in the west suburbs who is seeking to hire a Deputy General Counsel to serve as a key member of their legal team. The Deputy General Counsel will act as the right hand and 2nd in command to the General Counsel while providing expert legal counsel in support of the company's goals and continued growth. The Deputy General Counsel will manage multiple established verticals within the legal department including up to 10-15 direct reports. The ideal candidate will have at least 9 years of experience while managing multiple teams including employment/HR and employee relations, labor, compliance & regulatory, and commercial litigation. This role requires exceptional leadership skills, legal expertise, and the ability to proactively manage risks while ensuring the company's operations align with legal requirements.

Job Responsibility:

  • Lead and develop a team of legal professionals, ensuring effective training while establishing and evaluating job responsibilities and performance
  • Provide strategic legal advice on a wide range of employment/labor law-related topics, including changes in employment laws that impact the business, business-wide employment counseling, company hiring/firing decisions, preparation/review of position statements, management of EEOC and state agency charges, employment litigation, and employee relations matters
  • Develop and manage in-house employment counseling pilot programs including participation in various committee and HR-related strategy meetings
  • Lead and manage legal investigations of serious employment-related allegations made to the business
  • Develop and execute process enhancements and infrastructure initiatives addressing HR and employment law matters, ensuring effective rollout and communication of legal programs
  • Advise on best practices for legal, regulatory, and compliance procedures, while ensuring adherence to legal documentation and organizational policies
  • Support the legal review of advertising, marketing, and related materials to confirm compliance with applicable legal standards
  • Directs enterprise risk management evaluation and strategy across the US
  • Ensure regulatory compliance by aligning with company policies and legal documentation and provide guidance on best practices
  • Manage the coordination with outside counsel on legal matters regarding employment law, commercial litigation and regulatory complaints
  • Evaluate legal cases and report findings to leadership, ensuring thorough research of applicable statutes and judicial decisions

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and active bar membership in good standing
  • 9+ years of experience including prior in-house and management level experience
  • Experience managing at least 5-10 direct reports while overseeing various legal business units
  • Strong background in managing employment/HR, labor, and employee relations within a corporate setting
  • Strong background in managing compliance and regulatory functions within a corporate setting
  • Proven ability to handle litigation, dispute resolution, and pre-litigation strategies effectively
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments
  • Ability to travel (10%) domestically or internationally as required
