Job Description:

The San Francisco City Attorney’s Office is seeking a qualified and motivated attorney to join its Government Team. The Government Team provides legal advice and serves as general counsel to San Francisco’s Mayor, Board of Supervisors, City Administrator, and an array of other City officials, City departments and agencies. The Deputy City Attorney position has a 16-step salary scale ranging from $155,428 to $272,350.

Job Responsibility:

  • Providing legal advice and serving as general counsel to San Francisco's Mayor, Board of Supervisors, City Administrator, and an array of other City officials, City departments and agencies
  • Interpreting City or State law or advising on the legal risks of a particular government action
  • Drafting ordinances, ballot measures, and administrative regulations
  • Reviewing contracts for legal and procedural sufficiency
  • Providing legal advice to commissioners before and during commission meetings
  • Functioning as the Office's expert on laws administered by the City officials and agencies
  • Developing expertise in areas of law that transcend issues particular to the attorney's client agencies

Requirements:

  • Licensed to practice law in California
  • Three or more years of experience, especially in an advice capacity as a government lawyer
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent legal analytical skills
  • Ability to assume responsibility for assignments and to work independently and efficiently
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and clients
  • Ability to manage and appropriately balance multiple assignments, meet deadlines, and adjust to fluctuations in workload

  • Draft and negotiate investment management agreements, non-disclosure agreements and other investment-related agreements with service providers (e.g., custodian, investment consultants, external discretionary investment managers, and outside legal counsel)
  • Draft and negotiate a wide range of service provider and vendor agreements, including software license agreements, subscription and SaaS contracts, and professional services agreements
  • Prepare and review requests for proposals (RFP) and requests for qualifications (RFQ) for a broad range of services, including investment management, consulting and information technology services
  • Participate in selection and oversight of outside investment counsel, including coordinating workflow, evaluating work product, and reviewing invoices
  • Provide legal advice on relevant laws, rules and regulations that affect our clients’ investment activities
