We are seeking a calm, patient, and resilient De-escalation Mentor to support students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) across schools in Lewes. This role mirrors a SEND Teaching Assistant position, with a strong emphasis on behaviour regulation, emotional support, and proactive de-escalation techniques to help pupils stay engaged in learning. You will work as part of a supportive team to ensure pupils feel safe, understood, and empowered with the strategies they need to succeed.

Job Responsibility:

  • Use calm, trauma-informed approaches to de-escalate challenging situations
  • Help pupils identify triggers and develop self-regulation strategies
  • Support teachers in maintaining a positive, well-managed learning environment
  • Build trusting, supportive relationships to promote confidence, wellbeing, and engagement
  • Record behaviour incidents and contribute to individual support plans
  • Assist with classroom routines, activities, and personalised learning tasks
  • Work collaboratively with staff, families, and external professionals

Requirements:

  • Experience working with children or young people, ideally in an SEND or behaviour-support setting
  • Excellent communication skills, patience, and resilience
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond with empathy
  • A flexible, proactive approach suited to a cover-based role
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (preferred)
  • Knowledge of de-escalation, restorative practice, or trauma-informed methods (preferred)
  • Experience in mainstream or specialist education environments (preferred)

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of de-escalation, restorative practice, or trauma-informed methods
  • Experience in mainstream or specialist education environments
What we offer:
  • Flexible cover work, with preference for full-week availability (Monday–Friday)
  • Opportunity to support pupils who thrive on consistency and positive role modelling
  • Supportive, professional school environments in the Lewes area
  • Valuable experience for careers in education, psychology, youth work, or SEMH support
