The Database Engineer (DBE) provides technical expertise across the full database lifecycle, including design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis. This role supports relational and object-oriented databases, database parser and loading software, and cloud-based data storage and retrieval solutions. The DBE works primarily at the front end of the system lifecycle-from requirements development through system acceptance testing and Initial Operational Capability (IOC)-ensuring database architectures align with overall system design and performance requirements. The position requires balancing tradeoffs across data volume, user concurrency, logical and physical distribution, response times, retention policies, and security controls.
Job Responsibility:
Support and lead database design, development, implementation, information storage and retrieval, data flow, and analysis activities
Develop and maintain relational and object-oriented databases, database parser software, and database loading software
Develop short- and long-term requirements for database administration and design from project inception through completion
Translate business and technical requirements into usable database schemas by creating and maintaining ad hoc queries, scripts, macros, and master data files
Lead and direct the development of database structures that integrate into the overall system architecture
Make architectural tradeoffs involving data volume, number of users, logical and physical distribution, response times, data retention rules, and security and domain controls
Analyze and evaluate system improvements, optimization opportunities, development efforts, and maintenance activities
Direct fulfillment and organization of database-related requirements across simple to complex systems
Lead the development of complex systems using queries, tables, Open Database Connectivity (ODBC), and cloud-based database storage and retrieval methodologies
Provide technical guidance throughout requirements development, system integration, acceptance testing, and IOC
Requirements:
Ten (10) years of experience as a Database Engineer supporting programs and contracts of similar scope, type, and complexity
Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline from an accredited college or university, or five (5) additional years of DBE experience in lieu of a degree
Extensive experience with installation and patching of Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager, and Oracle Data Guard
Strong experience with Linux operating systems, Linux command-line utilities, and Bash scripting
Experience developing and supporting database solutions using cloud methodologies
U.S. Citizenship is required for all applicants
DOD 8570 Certification
This position requires an active Security Clearance with appropriate Polygraph
Nice to have:
experience with MongoDB or other NoSQL databases
